Chapter 4 Nowhere to hide
Ophelia’s Point Of View
He was lying on the hospital bed shirtless. His arms, going to his chest, were bandaged with a white cloth–he still looked devilishly handsome and fucking hot even in the hospital bed like he was doing a modeling project there…
I pinched my arm, pulling myself back to reality. “Why am I here?” I asked as I strode towards the bed.
A smirk tugged the corner of his lips as his eyes found mine. “You need to finish your mission.. Wifey!”
I crossed my arms over my chest as I stood at the side of the bed. “I see...” I said.. “How about you tell me what's going on before I continue with my so-called mission?”
“Unless you tell me what you mean, I can't predict...” He retorted.
I chuckled.. “Right.. I should probably be more specific...” I said calmly. “Why the fuck did you take that damn bullet?” I glared at him.
“Why didn't you finish me off when you had the chance?” He threw a questioning gaze at me instead of answering my question.
“You can't answer a question with another question!” I didn't back down.
He sneered. “I just did...”
I sucked in a sharp breath. He was testing my patience. He knew something I didn't know, and that's why he fucking took that bullet for me, but what? Clearly he wasn't going to tell me.
I pulled my dress up and yanked out a dagger from my band, and I walked over to him. I positioned the knife on his neck, my glare sharp. “You better tell me the truth before I finish you right here and now!” I clenched my jaw.
Instead, he wrapped his other arm around my waist and pulled me closer to him. He winced from the pain but still refused to loosen his grip. I tried to shrug it off, but he didn't let me go. “Curiosity killed a cat, wifey.” His voice was low, his warm breath brushing against my skin, sending warmth flushing.
“I'm not a cat...” I retorted, trying my very best to push him away, but he didn't allow me–I don't fucking understand how he can still be this strong despite being in the hospital bed.
“Fair enough.” He whispered.
“So are you going to tell me the truth?” I forced words out of my mouth, ignoring the warmth increasingly rising in my skin.
His gaze found mine. I bit down my lower lip, my heart banging against my chest. This was dangerous–so fucking dangerous.
Silence filled the room as our eyes locked. The air was heavy with tension, which no one wanted to address. I was on top of him, his hand still on my waist.
“If you have nothing to say.. Let me go.” I broke the silence.
“You are now my wife, and you will stay with me… Or else?” His voice was low.
His words hung in the air.
“Or else what?” I dared him to finish his sentence.
He chuckled, his voice cold and stern. “I will destroy your whole clan and make you watch it!”
He meant each word… He was Daniel fucking Russo.
My hands trembled, forcing the dagger in my hands to drop on the floor with a loud thud. I forced myself to swallow the lump forming in my throat. “Is that a threat?”
He lifted his hand to my face, pulling the strands of my hair behind. “It's a friendly warning.”
I scoffed.. “A friendly warning...”
He nodded, his eyes still on my face.
“Anyways.. I will stay with you.” I lied; I wanted to find out the truth, and then I would kill him and destroy my father.
“Good girl...” A smile tugged the corner of his lips.
I rolled my eyes. “Let me go...”
He released me, and I jumped off the bed, standing a few steps away from it. I sucked in a few breaths, trying to pull myself together. I don't like these sensations rushing through me, especially for him. He was my fucking prey, a possible murderer of my brother. I needed to stay away from him and kill these stupid emotions. He was my fucking enemy.
~~
That day he was released from the hospital, and I went to their house with them. Nothing was new; everything was just like how it was from my house… A fucking expensive and luxurious mansion, a huge family, the don who makes rules for everyone, and a weak mother who follows all her husband's rules—it all made my stomach churn. I came from one prison to another prison, except I won't stay here any longer.
My steps were light as I tiptoed to study. That's where I'd get everything in looking for; I wasn't going to stay here for too long.
I gently grabbed the doorknob and twisted it slowly and pushed the door open. I closed it behind me gently.
I made my way to the table. It was a huge mess with files and papers scattered on it. I made my way to the drawer and flung it open.
I took out the blue and red files, which represented the contract of and contract killers. That's where I would get everything.
I placed them on the table and flung them open. Inside was a signed contract. My eyes were wide open as my gaze locked with my dad's signature; there was an image of me and… my knees weakened at the image of Levi, my older brother who was brutally murdered.
I stumbled a step back, the world around me spinning. How.. My dad signed a contract to get me and Levi killed, but why?
My eyes were blurring with tears. I couldn't even read the contract. All I saw was my dad's signature along with my brother's picture and me..
No, this has been a misunderstanding. My dad had no reason to get us killed; he can't have an agreement with the Russos. We hated them as a family. This must be their plan to ruin our family. But what if it was true and my dad really ordered for us to be killed? I couldn't understand anything; everything was a big mess.
I froze to the ground as the sound of footsteps echoed from outside, approaching. Someone was coming, and there was no way for me to hide. I was done for today.
