Chapter 10 The Ledger Widens

Thaddeus slept with a heavy heart.

The penthouse bedroom was too large, too quiet. He lay on his back staring at the ceiling, the city lights bleeding through the blinds in thin gold stripes. Responsibility pressed against his ribs like a second set of lungs. He had chosen to live. He had chosen to answer. But the weight of that choice had not lightened in the dark.

He thought of Lily’s small hand slipping from his shirt. Of Gregory’s last rasp under his forearms. Of the thirty-seven percent statistic Malachi had spoken—millions walking the path of deliberate evil. Traffickers. Abusers. Warlords. Their followers. Their victims.

Sleep came eventually, fitful and shallow.

Morning arrived gray and cold.

Thaddeus stood at the window in a fresh black suit, watching the city wake. Malachi entered silently, already dressed, golden skin muted under the charcoal fabric.

“My lord,” he said with a small bow. “We are ready when you are.”

Uriel followed, tie loose, expression stormy but controlled. “The sooner we move, the better. I can feel the Balm somewhere in this city. It’s close. But so is Echo.”

Thaddeus turned. “Then let’s go.”

They descended in the private elevator. Thaddeus stepped into the underground garage for the first time. The black SUV waited—sleek, tinted, paid for in cash. His first real ride since everything changed.

Malachi slid behind the wheel without a word. Uriel took shotgun, wings tucked invisibly, eyes scanning every shadow. Thaddeus climbed into the back seat alone, the leather cool against his palms.

The engine purred to life.

Malachi drove smoothly through the morning traffic, voice calm. “We will begin with the lower districts. The whispers are strongest near the warehouses. The Balm is hidden, but not invisible to those who listen.”

Uriel grunted. “I can feel it like a heartbeat. It’s here. Somewhere.”

Thaddeus stared out the window, hands resting on his knees. “I thought the Ledger only opened when I touched someone.”

Malachi glanced at him in the rearview mirror. “It did. At first. But you have fed it, my lord. Every harvest, every save, every orchestrated death—it grows stronger. It no longer needs contact to speak.”

Uriel snorted. “It’s waking up. Becoming more than a tool. Soon it will have opinions.”

Thaddeus felt the familiar hum in his veins—quiet, patient, waiting. He had thought it was just power. Now it felt like something alive, watching him back.

They drove in silence for a while, the city sliding past in gray streaks. Then the hum sharpened.

Crimson text exploded across Thaddeus’s vision—brighter, larger, more insistent than ever before.

REAPER’S LEDGER – URGENT GLOBAL ALERT

SECONDARY TARGET ACQUIRED

Location: Mexico City, Distrito Federal

Target: Unidentified female child (age 9)

Fated Death: Organ harvesting (active procedure)

Time Remaining: 06:41:22

Harvest Value if totally addressed: $780,000

SECONDARY HOST ACTIVITY DETECTED IN REGION – CAUTION

Thaddeus sucked in a breath. The words burned behind his eyes.

Malachi slowed the SUV at a red light. “What is it, my lord?”

Thaddeus’s voice was rough. “Mexico City. A little girl. They’re… harvesting her organs. In 6 hours time.”

Uriel turned in his seat, eyes narrowing. “The Ledger is reaching beyond the city. It never did that before.”

Malachi’s hands tightened on the wheel. “It is growing. As you grow stronger, so does it. Your responsibility is no longer local, my lord. It is global.”

Thaddeus stared at the crimson text. The timer ticked down: 06:40:18.

He thought of Lily again. Of her small fingers clutching his arm in the van. Of her whispered “Don’t go, Daddy.”

He thought of the thirty-seven percent. The traffickers. The warlords. The silent followers. The children still waiting.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

When he opened them, his voice was steady.

“I can’t be in two places at once.”

Malachi nodded slowly. “You do not have to be.”

Uriel leaned forward. “Thatis why we are here..Send me, master. Within the six hours. I’ll finish the mission. I’ll bring the girl back—or end whoever is doing this. We’ll have one more fallen bound to us very soon.”

Thaddeus looked at him. Uriel’s face was hard, but his eyes were steady. Loyal.

Malachi spoke quietly. “It is wise, my lord. Uriel is built for this kind of work. He will return before Echo can close the distance. We can continue the search for the Ageless Balm here.”

Thaddeus exhaled. The timer read 06:39:14.

He thought of the Ledger’s hum—stronger now, reaching across borders without his touch. He thought of the world breaking open, of anchors like him trying to hold it together.

He nodded once.

“Uriel,” he said. “Go.”

Uriel’s lips curved in a rare, fierce smile. “As you command, master.”

He opened the door. Stepped out into the street. Golden fire flared around him—brief, blinding. Wings snapped open for a heartbeat, then vanished. He was gone, streaking upward in a line of light that disappeared into the clouds.

The SUV was silent.

Malachi started driving again.

Thaddeus leaned back, staring at the empty passenger seat.

He knew now.

The Ledger was no longer confined to his city.

His responsibility was the world.

He needed more fallens.

He needed to act faster.

He needed the Ageless Balm before his body failed completely.

He looked out at the passing buildings, at the people moving below—some innocent, some not.

The hum in his veins pulsed once, patient, waiting.

Thaddeus closed his eyes.

“I’m ready,” he whispered.

The city swallowed them.

And somewhere far away, in Mexico City, Uriel descended.
