Chapter 7 Chapter 7

Lyric POV

That night I skip dinner in the dining hall and decide to have dinner on the beta floor with Winter.

“so are we going to talk about Mason being your mate?” she asks as we sit at the kitchen island on the beta floor.

“I would much rather forget about it” I mutter.

“you know when we were pups, I dreamed of turning 18 and finding out Mason was my mate, but after all the hell his attention cost me and Summer being Summer around him, he forgot about me” I say.

Back then it felt like a fairytale. Mason Lane, future Alpha of MoonVeil, choosing me.

Now all I can think about is every scar Summer left behind because he looked at me for too long.

“but now, it just feels like a death sentence” I say trying to shake the feeling of dread.

“well let’s just hope she never finds out he is your mate before the year is over” she says.

The problem is Summer notices everything when it comes to Mason. Every look. Every conversation. Every second of attention.

“yeah with the way your brother is acting I doubt it, so are we submitting our applications together or am I in this alone?” I ask.

“you’re never alone Lyric, let’s go to your room so we can submit them.” She says.

I’ve been feeling Mason trying to link me since earlier but I’m just not ready to talk to him yet.

The more I talk to him, the harder this gets.

Because every time Mason acted like I mattered, some stupid part of me wanted to believe him.

After we submit our applications Winter goes to the alpha floor and we agree to meet up before training to run the border.

I wake up the next morning feeling very unsettled.

“what’s going on Nova” I ask her.

“not sure, but I just have a bad feeling” she adds before retreating leaving me to my own thoughts.

Lately bad feelings haven’t been feelings at all. They’ve been warnings.

I shower and put my hair in two braids.

“Waiting downstairs, might want to sneak out the back of the packhouse, Mason and Hunter are running patrols this morning” Winter links me just as I finish tying my sneakers.

“Got it, meet me out back by the pool” I link her.

I feel Hunter trying to open a link with me.

“Hey half-pint, what you getting into this morning?” he links.

“running the border with Winter before training” I link.

“want some company?” he asks.

“I have company already, Winter. Maybe next time Mason” I say cutting the link and shutting him out.

He thinks I don’t know Hunter was asking for him.

Mason POV

Kane has been on edge since Winter told me Lyric was stabbed with a silver knife yesterday at school.

“We need to find out who hurt mate and make them pay” he growls.

“They will pay for attacking their future Luna” he snarls in my mind.

His emotions have been making me dizzy.

After Hunter and I finish our patrols I have him link Lyric to ask her what she is doing, she said she was running the border.

She couldn’t get anymore impressive.

Most girls our age are worried about dresses for the ball. Lyric is running patrol routes before sunrise.

She knows he is asking for me and she blocks him too.

“what did you do?” He asks me as we walk into the pack house.

“I didn’t do anything, except for what happened at school yesterday” I say.

“hey guys, my dad said he’s putting Lyric to spar with Savannah today” Micah says walking up.

“why?” I growl out.

“He said Savannah requested her as her spar partner today” he adds.

“she’s up to something” I say.

Lyric gets stabbed one day and suddenly Savannah wants to spar her the next?

Not a chance that’s a coincidence.

“if not her, then your girlfriend put her up to it” Hunter says.

“she’s not my girlfriend, I broke up with her last night” I growl.

“did you tell her that alpha?” he asks walking upstairs to the beta floor.

I smell Summer’s perfume before she even comes down the stairs.

“Mason I have been looking everywhere for you” She says walking up to me, she loops her arms through mine.

I stop and pull my arm free.

“Summer what are you doing?, I told you this is over” I snap.

“Mason this isn’t funny, stop playing” she says.

“I’m not it’s over I found my mate. Stop whatever this is” I retort.

For a second something flashes across her face. Not sadness. Not heartbreak. Something colder.

“You are ruining everything” she screeches.

I shake my head.

“Look I need to go get ready for training, I’ll see you around” I say turning and walking upstairs.

The look on her face follows me all the way upstairs, and I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve just set something in motion.
