Chapter 6 Chapter 6
Lyric POV
When I get to the pack hospital Dr. Grant doesn’t even ask questions, she flushes out the wound and gives me stitches. Although I am a werewolf I haven’t shifted so I still heal slow, faster than a human but slower than a shifted wolf. She wraps my side and tells me to take it easy for the next 2 days until I’m halfway healed.
“Lyric honey, I know I promised you I wouldn’t say anything, but this is getting out of hand” Dr. Grant says.
“last month it was a broken rib, the month before a broken arm” she adds softly.
What she doesn’t realize is every time I said something someone else got hurt. Every time I fight back someone smaller than me gets hurt.
I remember once Summer took something the Luna gave me and told me a spare didn’t deserve nice things. So I punched her.
That night an Omega girl who was nice to me fell off the roof of the school “accidentally.” She never told anyone how she got there. Her parents left the pack the moment she was released from the hospital.
Summer left a note in my room.
[next time they won’t survive, you don’t get to fight back, you are nobody]
After that I never fought back and just made my plans to run.
Every year I told myself the same thing. Just survive until eighteen. Just survive until the Royal Warrior Program. Just survive long enough to leave.
“don’t worry doc I’m handling it, I have a plan” I say hopping off the table.
The plan wasn’t a good one. It wasn’t even a smart one. It was just the only thing that had kept me going for years. Leave. Never come back. Start over somewhere Summer couldn’t reach me.
“I hope it is before you lose your life” she says.
“don’t worry, I swear everything is fine” I say walking towards the door.
When I step out Winter is pacing outside the room.
“are you okay?” she asks when she sees me.
“I’m fine, she said take it easy” I say.
“Lyric we have to talk about what happened” Winter whisper yells.
I look around before responding when we step outside.
“there is nothing to talk about, she just wants me to stay away from Mason, that should be easy, I’ve done it for the last 8 years, what’s one more” I say shrugging walking towards the packhouse.
And honestly? Until today that hadn’t been difficult. Mason barely noticed I existed for years.
“Lyric did you see him at school today, Mason is not staying away from you” she says standing in front of me to stop me from walking.
“well I don’t know what’s wrong with him, why now?” I say and I freeze as my brain answers my own question.
Mason can scent his mate.
The staring, the attention, the scene at school.
The realization slams into me like a train.
Every strange look. Every time he found an excuse to be near me. Every time his eyes followed me around a room.
None of it was random.
“I’m his mate” I say out loud.
The words feel wrong the second they leave my mouth. Not because they aren’t true. Because they are.
“oh my god. No. She’s going to kill me” I whisper.
Not metaphorically. Not eventually.
Actually kill me.
I look at Winter and I can feel the panic wash over me.
“calm down Lyric” Nova says.
“He’s our mate.”
“She’s, she’s going to kill me” I say to Nova.
My breathing starts coming out in short spurts, my vision starts blurring.
“I can’t breathe” I say.
I hear Winter’s voice but it’s coming out muffled.
My breathing begins to even out, my heart rate slows and as my vision comes into focus—
“Mason” I say breathless.
“are you okay?, you seemed like you were having a panic attack” he says his voice calming me further.
No.
I jump back from him when my brain finally catches up.
Being near him feels too good. Too safe. That’s the problem.
Mason doesn’t understand what happens to people Summer decides she hates.
“thanks but I have to go” I say walking fast towards the pack house.
“it’s going to be okay, maybe she won’t find out” Nova says.
“who are you kidding did you see him today?” I snap at her.
“I just need to stay away from him as much as possible for the next year, avoid Summer and then reject him” I say to her.
Nova whimpers in my mind at that.
“I know this isn’t what you want to hear Nova, but she will destroy me if she finds out before my birthday next year” I say.
“we have to stay away from him.”
Because every minute he spent looking at me was another reason for Summer to come after me.
She just whimpers some more and retreats to the back of my mind shutting me out.
She is upset about her mate but I know she understands why.
Mason POV
When Winter links me to come to the pack hospital because something is going on with Lyric my stomach drops.
Kane forces the shift before I can even process it.
When I get there they are in the parking lot and Lyric looks like she’s hyperventilating.
I hear her say she can’t breathe and I shift back and run up to her.
I cup her cheeks in my hands tell her to calm down.
Eventually her breathing evens out.
The way she says my name when she notices me steals my breath and goes straight to my cock.
She seems to fully register that it’s me standing in front of her and she thanks me then runs off.
I turn to Winter eyes blazing my aura slamming into her.
“what the hell were you doing here?” I say to her.
She bows her head in submission.
“somebody stabbed Lyric at school today” she grits out.
For a second I think I heard her wrong.
Stabbed.
Not hurt. Not injured. Stabbed.
“What?” I growl.
My body starts vibrating as I fight Kane for control.
“who” I grit out.
Kane is already trying to break free. Every instinct inside me is demanding blood.
“I don’t know alpha, she said she couldn’t see them” she says.
“find out” I snarl releasing her as I shift and run for the woods.
Who would do that to her?
