Chapter 9 FLOOR 2
The blinding white light of the elevator did not fade gently, it shattered like glass, one second, Julian and Lyra were rushing upward through the center of the planet, the next second, the floor beneath their feet turned completely solid, the intense speed stopped instantly, throwing them both forward onto a hard, cold ground.
Julian gasped, shaking his head to clear the flashing white spots from his eyes, he sat up quickly and checked his status bar, his health was full, his stamina was completely restored, the warm energy of Level 3 was still pulsing through his veins.
He looked around to analyze their new environment, they were no longer in a dark, rocky underground caver, Floor 2 was completely different.
They were standing in the middle of a massive, silent forest, but the trees were not made of wood, the trunks were tall, smooth columns of polished gray metal, instead of green leaves, the branches held thousands of sharp, geometric glass panels that reflected a pale violet light, the sky above was a smooth, endless ceiling of solid dark steel, thousands of tiny, white fiber-optic lines ran across the metal sky, blinking slowly like distant, artificial stars.
"We made it out," Lyra breathed, pushing herself up from the metal grass, she immediately pulled her massive tactical greatsword from her bag, her hazel eyes darting across the strange violet woods, her golden Sentinel shield hummed softly around her armor, "The Executioner didn't follow us."
"Not yet," Julian said, standing up and brushing metallic dust off his jeans, he pulled the Static-Lag Dagger from his belt loop, the dark glass blade glowed with a faint, steady crimson light, completely stable after its upgrade, "The system closed the elevator portal just in time, but that Executioner unit is part of the core cleanup protocol, it won't stop tracking us, it is just waiting for the System AI to calculate our new coordinates on this floor."
Julian looked up at the top right corner of his vision, the crimson patch timer was gone, but a new, cold blue progress bar had taken its place.
SYSTEM NOTICE: Sector Localization in Progress.
Tracking Anomaly 'Julian Vance' on Floor 2... 12% Complete.
"We have some time before it finds us, but not much," Julian said, his voice calm and focused, "We need to find a safe zone or a high-density data sector to mask our signature, what do your faction files say about Floor 2, Lyra?".
Lyra adjusted her grip on her greatsword, her face serious, "Floor 2 is called the Silicon Grove, in the standard tutorial manuals, it is a resource floor, it is controlled by automation programs, the monsters here are not flesh or data-static, they are rogue mechanical units, drones, scrap-scavengers, and automated security systems."
She paused, looking down at a path of smooth silver gravel that wound through the metal trees, "The manuals say the main faction hub on this floor is The Outpost Grid, it is heavily protected by ancient firewall code, if we can reach it, the System AI cannot deploy an Executioner inside the perimeter without crashing the whole floor."
"Then that is where we go," Julian said, he activated his Perception attribute, which was now at a powerful 14 points, and combined it with his newly ranked-up Savvy trait.
Instantly, the silent violet forest transformed in his sight, the beautiful glass leaves and smooth metal trunks faded into the background, in their place, Julian saw thousands of tiny, glowing blue lines running through the silver gravel path, it looked like a massive circuit board stretching out across the floor.
But as his eyes tracked the circuit path ahead, he noticed something wrong, a hundred yards down the trail, the blue lines suddenly twisted, they turned an angry, glowing yellow, forming a dense web of overlapping geometric grids across the floor and the trees.
Hazard Identified: Automation Security Grid (Rank: D).
Description: A localized network of invisible infrared laser wires. Stepping into the grid will sound a sector alarm and activate nearby defensive turrets.
"Stop," Julian said, extending his hand to catch Lyra’s arm before she could take another step down the path, "The path is bugged, the automation system has set up a security laser web across the entire trail," Lyra squinted at the empty air between the metal trees, to her eyes, the path looked completely clear and peaceful. "I don't see anything, Julian, are you sure?"
"Trust me," Julian said, "If your boot touches that sector, a dozen automated turrets will pop out of the ceiling and turn us into swiss cheese, the lasers are completely invisible to normal player attributes, the system is trying to force us into a bottleneck," Lyra slowly stepped back, her trust in him absolute, "Can we go around it?, Walk through the metal woods?".
Julian tracked the yellow grid lines with his eyes, the system was smart, the laser web stretched out for fifty yards on either side of the path, wrapping tightly around the bases of the metallic trees, there was no physical gap large enough for a human to squeeze through.
"No," Julian said, a cold, calculating smile appearing on his face as his data-analyst brain began to look for the loophole, "The system built a perfect wall, but every digital wall has a command console, a root directory that controls the logic."
He stepped closer to the edge of the invisible grid, his eyes scanning the base of the nearest metal tree, near the roots, hidden beneath a layer of fake silver moss, Julian spotted a small, square metal box, it was a local junction node, pulsing with a faint yellow light.
Julian knelt down and cleared away the silver moss, he placed his hand on the cold metal surface of the box, activating his new skill.
Class Skill Activated: Logic Overwrite (Rank: ).
Accessing Automation Security Grid Directory...
Instantly, a massive holographic spreadsheet of system commands snapped into existence right in front of his face, it was written in a complex, fast-moving language of binary automation logic, to a warrior or a mage, it would look like complete gibberish, but to Julian, it looked exactly like the broken, unoptimized database systems he used to clean up for corporate banks.
He quickly located the primary command line for the laser web:
Command Line 04: IF Target = Player, THEN Activate Laser_Deconstruct = TRUE.
Julian’s fingers twitched in the air, typing against the invisible keyboard of the interface, he didn't try to shut the system down, shutting down a security grid would sound an alarm at the main server hub, alerting the System AI to their exact location, instead, he simply decided to rewrite the definition of a threat.
He highlighted the word Player in the code, deleted it, and replaced it with a different system variable.
Command Line 04: IF Target = Mechanical_Unit, THEN Activate Laser_Deconstruct = TRUE.
Julian hit the virtual enter key.
Logic Overwrite Successful!
Security Grid Parameters Inverted.
Savvy Attribute Progress: 15/200.
The yellow grid lines in his vision instantly turned a cool, passive green, the invisible lasers were still active, but they were no longer looking for humans, they were now programmed to destroy the very machines that built them.
"The wall is ours now," Julian said, standing up and sliding his dagger back into his belt, "Let's move," "You are terrifying, Julian," Lyra laughed softly, stepping onto the path beside him, "You didn't just disable the trap, you stole it."
They walked quickly through the green laser zone, the air felt cool and crisp, carrying a strange scent of machine oil and ozone, but as they reached the exact center of the security sector, a loud, mechanical clicking sound echoed from the branches above them.
Three large, metallic shapes dropped from the steel ceiling, landing heavily on the silver gravel path fifty feet ahead.
The creatures looked like massive, mechanical spiders built from polished chrome and black carbon fiber, in place of eyes, their round heads held a single, spinning red camera lens, two long, hydraulic scythe-arms snipped the air with a terrifying clack-clack sound.
Monster Identified: Sector Patrol Drone (Level 3 - Mechanical Variant).
Health: 180/180
Alert Status: Threat Detected. Initiating Extermination Protocol.
The three mechanical spiders let out a high-pitched, electronic shriek, they opened their hydraulic arms and charged forward, their metal legs tapping furiously against the silver gravel with incredible speed, "Lyra, hold your position!",Julian shouted, his eyes wide with focus, "Do not attack them yet!"
"Julian, they are moving too fast!" Lyra warned, her greatsword glowing with golden energy as she prepared to step into her defensive stance, "They will hit us in three seconds!", "Two seconds," Julian corrected calmly, counting down the distance in his mind, "One second,Now, step left!".
The three mechanical spiders lunged forward, their red camera lenses locked onto Julian's chest, but as they leaped through the air, their heavy metal bodies passed directly through the invisible green lines of the modified security grid, instantly, the entire sector erupted.
Four hidden laser turrets popped out from the metal tree trunks, their barrels glowing with an intense, violet energy, before the spiders could even swing their hydraulic arms, the turrets fired a rapid barrage of high-frequency laser beams straight into the mechanical units.
PEW-PEW-PEW!
The violet lasers tore through the polished chrome armor of the spiders like paper, bright sparks and black oil exploded across the silver path, the inverted security code worked perfectly; the defense grid treated its own patrol drones like hostile invaders, unleashing maximum damage, two of the spiders exploded instantly into burning heaps of scrap metal.
Security Grid Kill Logged!
You have defeated 2x Sector Patrol Drones (Level 3).
Experience Gained: 160/400.
The third spider was heavily damaged, its left legs blasted away by the lasers, it crashed onto the gravel, its red camera lens cracking and flickering with static electricity, it dragged its broken body forward, trying to reach Julian with its one remaining scythe-arm.
Julian didn't run away, he stepped forward, drawing the Static-Lag Dagger, he lunged low, driving the dark glass blade straight into the center of the spider's cracked camera lens.
Latency Injection Successful! Target: Sector Patrol Drone C.
Injecting 10 units of Lag Data.
The mechanical spider froze instantly, a thick cloud of gray, pixelated mist wrapped around its chrome body, the machine’s internal gears began to grind and whine as its processing speed was violently dragged down by the latency code, it jerked backward an inch, froze for a full second, and became completely trapped in a loop of broken animation frames.
Julian turned his head to look at Lyra, his face relaxed. "Finish it."
Lyra smiled, stepping forward with absolute confidence, she swung her massive greatsword in a clean, horizontal arc, the blade cut straight through the frozen spider’s neck, sending its heavy metal head flying into the woods, the mechanical body collapsed into a heap of silent junk.
Combat Encounter Concluded!
You have defeated 1x Sector Patrol Drone (Level 3).
Experience Gained: 80/400.
Current Experience: 240/400.
Among the burning piles of scrap metal, Julian spotted a small, bright blue electronic card lying on the ground, he knelt down and picked it up. His Savvy attribute instantly identified the item.
Loot Identified: Security Encryption Key (Rank: D - Uncommon).
Description: A high-level data key used to bypass primary firewalls on Floor 2.
"This is exactly what we need to get into The Outpost Grid," Julian said, slipping the blue card into his pocket, he looked up at the steel sky, the blue localization bar in his vision was ticking up again, reaching 35%.
"The system is still searching for us," Julian said, his eyes narrowing as he looked down the long, silver path ahead, "We need to move fast, the real defense system of this floor is about to wake up."
