Chapter 8 THE RUINED CORE HUB
The journey across the fractured landscapes of Floor 1 was an exercise in absolute vigilance, the short three-mile trek from the safety of the village to the sector elevator was no longer a simple walk through a post-apocalyptic ruin, because the System AI was actively compiling Server Patch 1.2, the very air felt thick, charged with an angry, static tension that made the hairs on Julian’s arms stand on end, Above them, the crimson geometric eye in the silver circuit sky grew larger, its crimson lines pulsing like a countdown timer.
Every breath Julian took felt like inhaling microscopic shards of glass, the environment around them was actively rejecting their presence, rewriting itself in real-time to hinder their progress, in the top-right corner of his vision, the system clock kept its ruthless pace, bleeding neon numbers that felt like a death sentence.
System Patch 1.2 Compilation: 45% Complete.
Time Remaining Until Executioner Deployment: 00:22:15.
"We are running out of time," Julian said, his eyes scanning the path ahead, his increased Perception of 14 made the world look hyper-detailed, stripped of all human illusion, where a normal person would see jagged rocks and ruined concrete, Julian saw endless columns of floating green dust motes, uncompiled code packets drifting through the air, more importantly, he could see the structural instabilities of the terrain, marked by flashing warning lines.
The environment here was known as the Deconstruction Zones, it was a chaotic, jarring mess of human architecture smashed together with alien geology, half of a concrete highway bridge hung suspended in mid-air, held aloft by glowing blue anti-gravity fields that hummed with a low, vibrating frequency, below it, a massive ravine split the ground, filled not with water, but with a flowing river of raw, purple data-static that hissed and bubbled like boiling acid.
Lyra walked a half-step ahead of him, her heavy greatsword resting ready in her grip, her golden Sentinel shield hummed softly, casting a warm, protective light against the dark obsidian rock faces, despite her strength, her movements were growing visibly sluggish.
"The Ruined Core Hub is just past that collapsed railway station," she said, pointing toward a massive, dome-shaped structure in the distance, the building was partially fused into the cavern wall, its steel supports twisted into unnatural, geometric angles, "But Julian, the closer we get, the more the floor logic feels... heavy, my legs feel like they are buried in wet cement, my stamina is draining twice as fast just from walking."
Julian looked down at his own status menu, his Stamina bar was indeed ticking down at an accelerated rate, losing two points for every single step he took, he focused his Savvy attribute on the heavy air around them, squinting until the hidden math revealed itself.
Environmental Trait Detected: Zone Compression.
Description: The System AI is actively tightening the local data grid to trap the anomaly. Movement cost increased by 100%.
"The system is trying to slow us down so the Executioner can catch us," Julian said, his jaw tightening as he wiped cold sweat from his forehead, he pulled the Static-Lag Dagger from his belt, its dark glass blade absorbing the dim ambient light of the cavern, "It’s cheating, it cannot legally delete me without violating its own core survival protocols, so it is manipulating the physics engine to make us sitting ducks."
"Then let's stop playing by its rules," Lyra said with a fierce, defiant grin, though she had to lean on the hilt of her sword for support, "How do we bypass a compression zone?"
Julian looked up at the suspended highway bridge overhead, his analytical mind quickly broke down the geometric coordinates of the structure, the highway was completely detached from the main ground level, because it was floating on its own anti-gravity vectors, the system's compression code had not yet linked to its structural logic.
"We climb," Julian said, pointing to a rusted iron maintenance ladder that stretched up the side of a massive stone pillar toward the floating road twenty feet above them, the system forgot to patch the vertical vectors, If we travel along the elevated highway, we can completely ignore the stamina drain."
"Lead the way," Lyra said.
They scrambled up the ladder, their hands gripping the cold, rusted iron, the metal flaked away under their fingers, leaving red dust on their palms, but Julian didn't care about the grime, the moment his boots touched the solid asphalt of the floating highway, the heavy, crushing weight on his chest vanished, his stamina bar stopped draining, stabilizing back at a normal rate.
Environmental Loophole Exploited!
You have bypassed the Zone Compression matrix.
Savvy Attribute Progress: 85/100.
They ran along the empty, cracked highway, abandoned cars from the old world sat frozen in time, their windows shattered, their metal frames partially glitched into the asphalt like ghosts trapped in concrete, below them, they could hear the frustrated, distorted howls of a dozen red-static hounds rushing through the lower ravine, the beasts ran in circles, their red eyes staring upward, completely unable to reach the two humans traveling along the unlinked upper path.
Within ten minutes of hard sprinting, they reached the end of the bridge, which positioned them directly above the shattered roof of the Ruined Core Hub.
The hub was a massive, hollow train station transformed into a dungeon checkpoint, in the center of the vast terminal stood a colossal column of solid white light that stretched from the floor all the way into the high ceiling, it was the Floor Elevator, the only gateway to Floor 2.
But the entrance was heavily blocked, standing in the grand archway of the station were four massive creatures, they were not hounds, these monsters were humanoid, standing eight feet tall, their bodies constructed entirely from heavy, jagged blocks of rusted iron and glowing red circuit wires that pulsed like veins, they carried massive stone clubs that sparked with crimson electricity, dragging them along the floor with a terrifying metal screech.
Monster Identified: Patch 1.1 Core Guardian (Level 4 - Guardian Variant).
Health: 250/250
Warning: High physical defense. Immune to standard stuns.
"Four of them," Lyra whispered, her face turning completely serious as she peered over the edge of the highway railing, even with my blue tile amplification, I cannot take on four Level 4 Guardians at the same time, their physical armor is too thick for my greatsword to pierce quickly, and they will overwhelm my shield before I can down even one."
Julian knelt down, his eyes darting across the grand terminal floor, he didn't look at the monsters; he looked at the environment surrounding them, his high Perception picked up a strange anomaly at the base of the elevator, the white column of light wasn't perfectly stable, it was flickering slightly, and a thin stream of pure white energy was leaking from its base, pooling into a cracked drainage grate on the floor tiles.
Julian focused his Savvy attribute on that drainage grate, reading the hidden strings of code.
Object: Core Drainage Valve. Logic Status: Connected to Elevator Overwhelm Protocol.
Loophole Detected: The elevator uses high-frequency light data to move matter, if the drainage valve is flooded with a contrasting data type, it will trigger an immediate, localized EMP pulse that disables all mechanical and digital entities within 30 feet for 5 seconds.
Julian looked down at his Static-Lag Dagger, yhe weapon injected latency data, the exact opposite of high-frequency light, it was pure, unadulterated slow-down code.
"Lyra, I have a plan, but it requires perfect timing," Julian said, his voice dropping into a calm, precise whisper, those Guardians are immune to standard stuns, but they are not immune to a total system crash, i am going to jump down and strike that drainage valve with my dagger, the resulting data crash will freeze all four of them solid for five seconds."
"Five seconds is all I need," Lyra said, her eyes lighting up with understanding as she loosened the straps on her heavy greatsword, "But Julian, you have to jump from here? ,that’s a twenty-foot drop, your Constitution is only four, the fall damage alone will drop your health to critical, or worse, break your legs."
"Not if I use the physics engine against itself," Julian replied with a cold, analytical smile, he pointed to a stalled delivery van parked right beneath the highway ledge, the roof of the van was made of thin, flexible fiberglass, "In this game world, falling onto a deformable object reduces impact velocity data by seventy-five percent, the system interprets the fiberglass as a soft landing pad because it calculates the deceleration curve, not the material hardness."
Before Lyra could object, Julian checked the crimson countdown timer in his vision, the eye in the sky was blinking rapidly now.
System Patch 1.2 Compilation: 85% Complete.
Time Remaining: 00:03:00
"No time to argue," Julian said, "On my mark, jump down after me and prepare your highest damage skill, Three... two... one... Mark!", Julian vaulted over the concrete highway barrier and dropped into the open air.
The wind rushed past his ears, a roaring sound that threatened to steal his focus, the feeling of falling was terrifying, a raw evolutionary panic screaming in his gut, but he kept his eyes locked firmly on the white roof of the delivery van, he braced his legs, aligning his posture with the system's downward vector.
CRASH!, his boots slammed into the fiberglass roof, smashing straight through the thin material in a loud shower of white shards and old insulation, the flexible roof buckled and tore, perfectly absorbing the brunt of the kinetic forces exactly as the physics engine dictated, a small text box flashed in his peripheral vision.
Fall Damage Sustained: 5 HP. (Minor Injury).
Julian didn't pause for a single second, he scrambled out of the broken van roof, tumbled onto the stone floor of the terminal, and bolted toward the drainage valve near the elevator base, her heavy boots echoing behind him, Lyra landed right after, using a localized shield burst to cushion her own descent.
The four Core Guardians heard the massive crash, they slowly turned their giant, rusted iron heads toward Julian, their heavy metal necks grinding like ungreased gears, their red circuit eyes flared with sudden anger, they raised their heavy stone clubs, the crimson electricity sparking violently as they prepared to crush the fragile human intruder into paste.
"Intruder... Detected...", one of the Guardians boomed, its voice a deep, mechanical rumble that shook the dust from the rafters, Julian didn't look up at their towering forms, he lunged forward, sliding on his knees across the smooth marble floor, and slammed the dark glass blade of the Static-Lag Dagger directly into the glowing white fluid inside the drainage grate, "Log out," Julian whispered.
Latency Data Injected into Core Drainage Valve!
Triggering System Overwhelm Protocol...
An ear-splitting sound, like a thousand glass windows shattering simultaneously, ripped through the terminal, a blinding shockwave of white and gray pixelated energy exploded outward from the drainage grate, washing over the entire room like a digital tidal wave.
Instantly, the four massive Guardians froze completely mid-stride, one was caught with its giant stone club held high over its head; another was frozen with its massive foot lifted in the air, the red circuit wires on their bodies died instantly, turning a dull, lifeless gray, their stone clubs stopped sparking, they stood like giant, rusted statues, completely paralyzed by the massive, localized system crash.
Core Guardians Status: System Crashed! Duration: 00:00:05
From the darkness above, a golden comet descended, Lyra dropped from the air, her massive greatsword held high above her head with both hands, her golden Sentinel shield flared with a blinding, explosive light as she channeled every single unit of her remaining mana into her ultimate class skill.
Class Skill Activated: Star-Shatter Vanguard!
She slammed her blade into the center of the four frozen statues, the amplified golden energy detonated with the force of a high-explosive bomb, without their digital defenses and physical damage mitigation code, the rusted iron bodies of the Guardians shattered into millions of tiny metal pieces and gray dust, completely obliterated in a single, magnificent strike.

Julian stood up, a warm wave of level-up energy washing away his minor fall injuries and completely refilling his stamina and health bars, But before he or Lyra could take a single step toward the elevator, a deep, terrifying roar echoed from the sky outside the terminal, the sound was so loud it shattered the remaining glass panels in the station's dome roof.
The crimson geometric eye in the ceiling suddenly shattered into a thousand red shards, the countdown reached zero.
Server Patch 1.2 Compilation: Complete.
System Executioner Unit: Deployed.
A massive bolt of pitch-black lightning tore through the roof of the station, striking the marble floor forty feet away from the elevator, the ground shattered, leaving a smoking black crater, from the darkness of the pit, a figure slowly rose.
It was a tall, skeletal warrior clad in jagged obsidian armor that seemed to actively bleed dark, swirling smoke, it carried a massive, jagged scythe that pulsed with a horrific, glitching purple aura, unlike the other monsters they had faced, this creature had no level display, no attributes, and no health bar, above its head, the system text simply read:
UNIT: EXECUTIONER-01 (SYSTEM CLEANUP PROTOCOL)
The Executioner raised its scythe, its faceless helmet turning slowly toward Julian, a cold, mechanical voice echoed directly inside Julian’s mind, bypassing the game interface and his physical ears entirely.
Target Identified: Anomaly Julian Vance. Core Directive: Erase.
"Julian, run!" Lyra screamed, her face pale as she grabbed his arm and pulled him toward the brilliant white column of the elevator light.
The Executioner moved with impossible, terrifying speed. It didn't run; it simply teleported forward, appearing fifteen feet closer in a sharp blink of static black light, the sound of its movement was like tearing paper, it raised its scythe to unleash a wave of destructive deletion code that would wipe their data from the universe permanently.
Julian didn't panic, he looked at the white elevator column, then at the floor tiles beneath the Executioner's feet, he had two unused attribute points from his level-up, he instantly dumped them both into Savvy, forcing his core trait to evolve.
Savvy updated: Rank E → Rank D (Progress: 0/200).
New Trait Unlocked: Logic Overwrite.
With his newly evolved trait, Julian’s vision transformed again, he saw a hidden, golden command line floating right at the edge of the elevator's light barrier, it was the manual override code used by the system administrators to close the doors instantly in case of an emergency.
As the Executioner swung its scythe, unleashing a crescent wave of black death code that dissolved the very air it passed through, Julian grabbed Lyra tightly by the waist, he dove headfirst into the white column of light and focused his entire mind on that golden command line, rewriting the elevator's closing delay with his thoughts.
"System Override: Close Portal!" Julian roared.
FLASH!, the white elevator column exploded with a blinding, absolute light, the structural shields snapped shut a fraction of a second before the Executioner’s black wave could hit them, the terminal vanished from sight, the world turned pure, brilliant white, and Julian felt his body being lifted upward through the core of the planet at unimaginable speed, leaving the nightmare of Floor 1 behind forever as they ascended to the unknown dangers of Floor 2.
