Chapter 3 THE SHUCKSTER'S HAVEN
The subway cavern was dying, large pieces of obsidian stone fell from the ceiling, smashing into the tracks, the air smelled like burnt electricity and cold smoke, every few seconds, the ground shook, "Keep moving!", Lyra yelled over the noise, she ran ahead, her heavy boots kicking up gray dust, her massive tactical sword was back in her duffel bag, but her eyes remained sharp and alert, Julian followed close behind her, his lungs burned from the run, his physical stats were low, and his body felt heavy and weak, but his mind was alive with energy, in the top right corner of his vision, a bright red digital clock was ticking down.
Time Remaining: 00:08:42, they had less than nine minutes to reach safety, If they failed, the system would delete this entire zone, they would turn into loose data and vanish forever, as they ran down the dark train tunnel, the concrete walls began to disappear, in their place, giant glowing metal sheets appeared, they looked like the inside of a massive computer, thousands of neon lines pulsed with light, Julian looked down at the ground, the gravel tracks were gone, now, they walked on a grid of glowing geometric tiles.
Because of his high Perception, Julian could see things Lyra could not, some tiles flickered with a faint, warning-purple color, "Lyra, stop!", Julian suddenly shouted, he reached out and grabbed her arm, Lyra froze instantly, her hand went to her sword, she looked around, searching for monsters, "What is it?, Do you see a hound?","No," Julian gasped, catching his breath. He pointed at a row of black tiles three feet ahead of them, "Look closely at the light, the code on those specific tiles is looping, it is a localized gravity trap, If you step there, the system will multiply your weight by ten, you will be pinned to the ground."
Lyra squinted at the floor, to her, the tiles looked completely normal, but she trusted Julian now, he had already saved her life twice with his strange knowledge,"Can we jump over it?",she asked,Julian looked at his own status screen, his Agility was only 5, he was not a good jumper, he scanned the surrounding walls, using his Savvy attribute to read the environment, he spotted a rusted water pipe running along the ceiling, a green text box popped up in his mind.
Object: Standard Utility Pipe. Logic Status: Unlinked to Floor Grid.
"We don't need to jump," Julian said, he picked up a heavy chunk of loose stone from the floor, he threw it hard at the ceiling pipe, the stone hit the pipe with a loud clang, the rusted metal cracked open, instantly, a stream of dirty water poured out, splashing directly onto the purple flickering tiles, the moment the water hit the floor, the neon lines short-circuited, the purple glow faded, turning into a safe, dull gray.
Environmental Bug Exploited!
You have safely neutralized a Floor 1 Hazard.
Savvy Attribute Progress: 35/100.
"The water broke the tile's programming," Julian explained with a small smile, "The trap is dead. We can walk," Lyra stared at him, her mouth slightly open, "You are completely ridiculous, Julian, you treat the apocalypse like a broken computer game," "It is a broken computer game," Julian said grimly, "And we are the players who need to survive it."
They walked safely across the dead tiles and pushed through a heavy metal door at the end of the tunnel, they stepped out into a massive, breathtaking space, It was a giant underground city, but it was ruined, massive skyscrapers from the surface world had been dropped here, smashed sideways into the cavern walls, broken cars sat on top of ancient stone arches, the sky above them was not blue; it was a dark ceiling covered in glowing silver circuit patterns, in the center of this madness sat a small, walled village, it was built out of scrap metal, old train cars, and glowing blue barrier fields, a large, holographic sign floated above the wooden gate.
FLOOR 1 SAFE ZONE: THE SHUCKSTER'S HAVEN
Status: Neutral Area. Combat Disabled.
"We made it," Lyra said, letting out a long breath, they walked toward the gate, the red countdown timer in Julian's vision vanished, replaced by a green checkmark as they crossed the blue barrier field, a wave of warmth washed over Julian.
The burning pain in his lungs instantly disappeared, his stamina bar refilled to 100%,
the village inside was quiet but busy, dozens of people sat on the ground, dirty and terrified, they were survivors from other parts of the city, some were crying, others stared at their floating status menus in shock, "We need gear, and we need information," Lyra said, looking around, "My faction told me there would be a contact here, an old survivor."
She led Julian toward a strange shop built inside an old, overturned subway car, a purple neon sign blinked in the window: Malakai’s Odds and Ends.
They stepped inside. The shop was filled with weird items. There were rusty swords, glowing blue potions, and broken electronic keyboards. Sitting behind a counter was an old man with a long gray beard. He wore a dirty trench coat.
But what caught Julian's attention was the man's left arm. It was not made of flesh. It was made of floating, blocky gray pixels that shifted and glitched constantly.
"New arrivals," the old man rasped. His voice sounded like grinding stones. He did not look up from the rusty dagger he was cleaning. "Let me guess. You think you are heroes. You think you are going to level up, kill the boss, and save the world."
"We just want to survive, old man," Lyra said firmly. "I am Lyra Thorne of the Sentinel class. This is Julian."
The old man finally looked up. His eyes were sharp, but they looked incredibly tired. He looked at Lyra’s sword, then his eyes locked onto Julian. He blinked, his pixelated arm glitching rapidly.
"Well, well," the man muttered, leaning forward. "A Sentinel with high potential... and a boy with a very strange aura. Your stats are trash, kid, but your soul smells like forbidden code."
Julian stepped closer to the counter. "You are Malakai. You survived a previous Integration, didn't you?"
Malakai laughed dryly. "Smart boy. Yes. My world was integrated ten years ago. It was deleted. I am all that is left of my floor. The system keeps me here as a merchant. A 'Shuckster.' I sell trash to fools who think they can win."
"We don't want trash," Julian said, his voice steady. "We want a weapon that matches my class. The Resourceful Climber."
Malakai stopped laughing. He stared at Julian for a long time. The silence in the shop grew heavy.
"The Climber," Malakai whispered. "A class for rats who hide in the walls. A class for hackers. Most people with that archetype die in the first three days because they try to fight like warriors."
The old man reached under the counter. He pulled out a small, dusty wooden box and set it on the table. He pushed it toward Julian.
"Open it," Malakai said. "If you can read the item description, you can keep it for free. If you can't, get out of my shop."
Julian placed his hand on the box. The wood felt cold. He opened the lid. Inside lay a small, rusty iron dagger. It looked completely useless. It looked like trash.
But Julian did not use his eyes. He activated his Savvy attribute. He looked at the underlying code of the dagger.
Instantly, the rusty red color of the knife began to pulse with a hidden green light. A text box appeared in the air, flashing violently with a warning message.
[Item Identified: The Glitched Shiv (Rank: E - Broken)]
[Physical Damage: 2 (Pathetic)]
[Unique Property: Code Inversion.]
[Description: This item was forged during a server error. It does not deal standard physical damage. Instead, it injects 5 units of latency data into any target it cuts, causing the target's physical movements to lag by 1.5 seconds.]
Julian smiled. To a normal warrior, a weapon that dealt 2 damage was useless. But to Julian, a weapon that could freeze an enemy's movements for nearly two seconds was a godsend. It was the ultimate loophole weapon.
Julian looked up at Malakai. "It injects lag data," he said simply. "It slows down time for the target."
Malakai’s eyes widened in pure shock. His pixelated left arm flashed bright blue. He let out a loud, booming laugh.
"I'll be damned," the old man roared. "You can actually see it! You can read the broken text! Keep it, kid. You might just survive Floor 1 after all."
But before Julian could thank him, a loud, deep chime echoed across the entire safe zone. The sky above them turned a bright, angry crimson. A massive worldwide announcement box snapped into existence before every survivor's eyes.
[ATTENTION ALL UNITS: Floor 1 Integration Finalized.]
[System AI Notice: Anomaly detected in Sector 4. Unregistered temporal rollbacks have been logged.]
[Deploying Server Patch 1.1: Increasing Monster Spawn Rate by 50%.]
[Target Location of Anomaly: Sector 4 Safe Zone.]
Julian's heart stopped. The System AI was already tracking him. It was changing the rules of the entire world just to kill him.
