Chapter 2 SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS

The sensation of dying was not a clean, dark sleep, for Julian Vance, it felt like being torn into thousands of pieces, he watched his own hands turn into glowing pixels, the blue particles scattered into the dark ceiling of the subway cavern, then came the pain, it was not a physical burn, it was a loud, terrifying mental static that filled his head, it felt like his mind was being erased and written over.

FATAL ANOMALY DETECTED.

[User Julian Vance: HP reduced to 0.

System Protocol 404: Unregistered Loophole Triggered.

Savvy Attribute Overload. Initiating Sector Rollback.

Please stand by...a sudden, violent wave of dizziness hit Julian, he felt like he was falling backward through a deep tunnel, he gasped for air and threw his upper body forward, his hands slapped hard against a flat, plastic surface.the rhythmic, mechanical humming of a train engine filled his ears, the dim, flickering glow of fluorescent lights hit his eyes, Julian blinked rapidly, cold sweat poured down the back of his neck, he looked down at his lap, his hands were solid again, his computer tablet sat right there, completely unbroken, the spreadsheet of financial algorithms was still on the screen.

"Next stop, Sector 4 Grand Central," the automated intercom droned, Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird, he whipped his head across the semi-empty subway car, Sitting directly across from him was Lyra Thorne, her posture was perfectly straight, her sharp eyes restlessly scanned the dark tunnels outside, the heavy black duffel bag sat right between her combat boots.

She was alive, an overwhelming wave of relief washed over Julian, it was so intense that he felt lightheaded, he opened his mouth to call out her name, but he forced himself to stop, he needed to think, he needed to analyze the situation, Lyra did not know him yet, in this freshly reset timeline, he was just another late-night commuter on an eleven forty-two train, if he ran up to her claiming they had just died fighting metal hound-monstrosities, she would think he was crazy, she might even draw her weapon on him.

Suddenly, a transparent, neon-blue interface snapped into existence right in front of him, it floated in the air, glowing softly, Julian glanced around the car, but no one else seemed to notice it.

Rollback Successful. Temporal Anchor: 5 Minutes Prior to Integration.

Julian leaned in closer, his analytical brain immediately locked onto the floating text, this looked like the data spreadsheets he studied every day.

Current Active Benefit: Retain memory across localized timeline fractures.

Julian stared at the screen, a cold realization settled into his mind, his physical stats were terrible, his Strength and Constitution were below average for a normal human, If a monster so much as scratched him, he would likely die instantly, he could not fight his way out of this apocalypse with a sword like Lyra did, he was too weak, but his Perception and his Savvy trait were incredibly high, the system operates on rules, Julian thought, his fingers twitched instinctively, as if he were typing on a keyboard. And every system built on rules has mistakes, It has loopholes.

He looked at the tiny digital timer counting down in the top right corner of his vision,

no time until integration: 00:02:14, two minutes, he had exactly two minutes before the world shattered again, two minutes before the train doors blew open and the monsters poured inside, two minutes before Lyra stood in the breach to sacrifice herself.

Julian stood up from his seat, his legs were shaking slightly, but his mind was crystal clear, the fear was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating focus, he gripped his broken tablet, stepped across the narrow aisle, and stopped directly in front of Lyra, Lyra’s hand moved instantly, her fingers dropped toward the zipper of her duffel bag, her sharp, hazel eyes locked onto his face, she registered him as a danger.

"Can I help you, civilian?" she asked, her voice was like tightly coiled steel, "You are a Sentinel," Julian said, he kept his voice very low so the other passengers could not hear him,Lyra froze, her eyes narrowed into dangerous slits, "Who are you?, Who do you work for?, The Vanguard Faction should not have scouts in this sector yet."

"I do not work for anyone," Julian whispered, he glanced up at the flickering ceiling lights, "But in exactly one minute and forty seconds, the lights in this car are going to die, the train will come to a violent stop, the sky outside is going to rewrite itself into blue lines of computer code, then, a pack of static-hounds is going to tear through that front door."

Lyra’s jaw tightened, she slowly began to unzip her bag, Julian could see the dull metallic sheen of her heavy tactical blade, "If this is a joke", "It is not a joke, and when you fight them," Julian interrupted, leaning closer to her, "do not stand on the red lines of code that appear on the floor, they will drain your Sentinel's Aegis barrier by fifteen percent every second, stick to the blue geometric lines, they will amplify your strike damage and make you stronger."

Lyra completely stopped unzipping her bag, her breath caught in her throat, she stared at Julian as if she were looking at a ghost, "How could you possibly know about the floor mechanics?, the Integration has not even finalized yet, the system data should not be leaking to unawakened civilians", "Because we already lived this," Julian said grimly, "And you died saving me, i triggered a system reset to bring us back, i do not intend to let you die a second time."

Before Lyra could process his words, the train began to screech, it was the exact same metal-tearing halt, the lights violently died, plunging the car into pitch blackness, screams erupted from the far end of the train car, but this time, Julian did not fall, he braced his feet against the metal seating row, his high Perception allowed him to track the movements in the dark, the neon-blue geometric lines traced themselves across the walls, they shattered the concrete world into floating blocks of binary code.

CRITICAL NOTICE: Dimensional Overlap Detected.

Initiating Sector Integration... Floor 1 Loading.

The front electronic door exploded inward with a shower of sparks, the exact same static-hound poured through the gas, its four mandibles split open, pulsing with red data-static, this time, Lyra did not hesitate, she ripped her massive sword from the duffel bag, her golden Sentinel's Aegis barrier instantly flared to life around her body, she leaped forward, but as her boots hovered over the changing floor, she actively swerved, she planted her feet squarely onto a glowing blue line of code.

"Die!" she roared, she swung her blade in a powerful upward arc, backed by the blue tile's amplification rule, her sword did not just cut the hound, it unleashed a localized shockwave of golden energy, the blast completely vaporized the creature and the two monsters rushing in directly behind it, Lyra glanced back at Julian over her shoulder, her face was a mix of awe and fierce adrenaline, "You were telling the truth!".

"More are coming from the ceiling!", Julian shouted, his eyes scanned the shifting digital environment, his Savvy trait began to pulse, highlighting a specific, flickering green code block near the train’s emergency brake valve,

a new system prompt flashed in Julian's mind.

Hidden Environmental Logic Identified:

Emergency Override Valve contains a localized data-dump bug. Rupturing the valve will vent pressurized, uncompiled cryogenic code into the sector.

Julian smiled, a dangerous, thrilling spark ignited in his chest, he did not have the strength to fight the horde with a blade, but he had just found his very first weapon, he rushed toward the valve, "Lyra, cover me!", Julian yelled, Lyra did not ask questions, she spun her massive sword, creating a wall of golden light between Julian and the advancing monsters, three more metal hounds leaped from the ceiling, their claws scraping against her shield.

The impact forced her back a step, but she held her ground, trust shining in her eyes,

Julian reached the glowing green code block, he did not have a tool, so he raised his heavy, shattered tablet and smashed it against the valve with all his might, the metal casing cracked, instantly, a blast of freezing white data-static sprayed out of the valve, it was not normal ice; it was uncompiled code that froze the logic of anything it touched, the white mist swept across the front of the train car, the metal hounds caught in the mist froze instantly, their red static eyes flickered and died, their bodies turned into brittle, gray blocks of frozen data.

Environmental Exploit Successful!

You have defeated 4x Corrupted Static Hounds (Level 1).

Experience Gained: 40/100.

Savvy Attribute Progress: 25/100.

Lyra lowered her sword, her chest heaving as she stared at the frozen monsters, she looked at the white mist, then back at Julian, a slow, respectful smile crossed her face, "A data analyst who knows how to hack reality," she said, wiping a splash of red dust from her cheek, "Maybe I won't have to carry you after all, "The zone is collapsing," Julian said, pointing out the shattered window, the cavern walls were beginning to blink rapidly, shifting between solid stone and empty black voids, "We need to find a safe zone, Now."

[Floor 1 Tutorial Quest Updated: Reach the Shuckster's Haven before Sector Deconstruction (Time Remaining: 10:00).

Julian grabbed his pack, and together, they leaped out of the broken train car and into the unknown.
