Chapter 6
Alexander hung up the phone.
Lila looked at Elara with a confused expression, "Elara, how can there be people like this in the world? No manners at all, can't even finish a sentence."
As she spoke, she got up, "Forget it, Grandma wants me to come to the Sinclair Manor for lunch. I'm leaving now!"
Elara grabbed her leg, "Lila, I heard you give your address just now. Is it possible that Mr. Sinclair is planning to come pick you up? If you leave now, won't he have come for nothing?"
"I'm not that important."
"You're not that important, but what if he's coming to pick you up for Mrs. Sinclair's sake? He married you because of Mrs. Sinclair, so in front of her, he has to at least pretend to treat you well. Coming to pick you up is one way to pretend."
Lila sat back down on the bed, "What you're saying kind of makes sense."
"Right, just wait here. When Mr. Sinclair arrives, he'll probably call you again."
"Okay, he didn't make himself clear anyway. If he doesn't come, I'll just take a cab to the Sinclair Manor. It won't be my fault if I'm late."
Elara agreed, "Exactly."
The two continued lying on the bed browsing job websites.
About fifteen minutes later, Lila's phone rang again.
"He really did call me again," Lila said.
Elara got up from the bed, "I'll go to the window and see if he's downstairs."
Lila had already answered the phone. Elara stood by the window and looked down. Sure enough, there was a super luxury car that totally didn't match this neighborhood!
She nodded frantically at Lila, signaling that it was Alexander.
Lila had also gotten out of bed and made an OK gesture to show she understood, then asked into the phone, pretending not to know, "Mr. Sinclair, what's up?"
Alexander's commanding voice came through, "Come downstairs."
Brief and to the point.
"Okay, I'll come down right away..."
Before she could say "thank you for your trouble," she heard the car horn honking again.
Could he be any ruder?
She was genuinely hurt.
Lila walked to the entrance to put on her shoes while saying to Elara, "Elara, I'm leaving now. We'll stay in touch by phone."
"Okay, take your time, don't fall."
"If I take my time, Alexander will kill me!"
With that, she pulled open the door and quickly went downstairs.
When Lila got downstairs, she saw a strange man standing by the car, and her steps hesitated a bit.
The man stepped forward with a smile, "Mrs. Sinclair, I'm Mr. Sinclair's assistant, Charlie Howard."
She nodded, "Mr. Howard, hello."
Charlie smiled, not expecting Mrs. Sinclair to be so polite.
He opened the car door, "Mrs. Sinclair, please get in."
Lila looked at the scene inside the car.
Alexander sat upright with his hands on his knees, his eyes looking somewhere—not at her anyway. Inside was terrifyingly quiet, like the calm before a storm.
"Mrs. Sinclair, shall we?" Charlie urged again.
Lila got in the car with a sense of facing her doom, sitting pressed against the door, eyes fixed on the scenery outside the window, as if staying far from Alexander would make her invisible to him.
Fortunately, he didn't give her any trouble during the ride.
When they arrived at the Sinclair Manor, both got out of the car.
Lila walked behind Alexander, ready to follow him inside in a "sidekick" manner.
But unexpectedly, Alexander suddenly stopped.
Lila, completely unprepared, bumped into his shoulder.
Alexander's clothes had a fresh, pleasant scent that was very familiar.
Lila was trying to remember what that scent was called when she heard him say coolly, "Listen, don't say anything bad about me in front of Grandma. If Grandma gives me trouble because you said something wrong, I'll make you pay double."
