Chapter Two

Iris’ POV

The new visitor walked through the main gates with his men trailing behind him like loyal bodyguards although he was the strongest of all five of them.

And that was when I realized my wolf had been eerily quiet.

The Alpha wolf walked with a confidence only a wolf of his position could carry so well. Without meaning to, I inched closer to get a better look.

I shouldn't have.

I took in a face that belonged on the front page of the most prestigious fashion magazine; the type of human women would keep in their rooms for their daughters to inherit. The sharp jaws on him could cut through stone and to worsen my case, I dared to look up, and I saw his eyes. Pools of sapphire blue were blazing across the entire crowd, searching for something.

I should have realized something was wrong, the way his nose kept sniffing the air like a hound dog searching for something and the way my wolf suddenly began wagging her tail in my head, at a loss for words.

Before I could retrace into the shadows, those blue gems finally landed on my face, his eyes meeting mine and an intense buzz cracked between us. I inched closer, my neck straining to get closer to him, my hands longed to grab his and intertwine it and I felt my body charge, a deep, impulsive desire possessing me.

His steps paused suddenly, making his Delta crash into his back, thankfully breaking the sizzling spell around us.

I released a shaky breath, finally getting a bit of control of myself. I'd never experienced anything so… overwhelming.

Aunty Lysandra never explained this to me and there I was, nearly giving away everything. I was supposed to blend in, be like the humans, not drawing the attention of an alpha.

But before I could run tail and hide, Nyx said a word I'd dreaded since I discovered what it meant.

"Mate," she murmured, the warmth intensifying.

I took one step in his direction, the pull from the bond trying so hard to gain my attention again but I growled, shoving it right under where my demons lived. Years of putting my emotions under control made me root my feet to the ground.

And then I turned around and walked behind all of the humans who were still wondering what the hell just happened.

His eyes scanned through the crowd meeting everyone in the training ground, except mine.

I noticed he wasn't looking for me anymore, more concerned with the reason most Alphas come down here.

With the brewing unrest between rogues and the White wolf led council, every Alpha needed as many fighting hands in their ranks as possible. They combed through training camps, orphanages, even the military looking for anyone they could recruit.

But something told me this particular Alpha was looking for something more.

But he wasn’t going to smell that I was a wolf. My contact lenses worked perfectly to prevent that.

I'd rather cut off my own hands than work for the wolves who did nothing after my pack and parents were massacred for no just cause.

"Lucian!" One of the agents suddenly appeared in his line of vision, blocking mine. "This way, please. The Mayor has been waiting for you."

My eyes trailed him as he walked through the gate towards the mayor's office.

I immediately started moving, not too fast that it'd become suspicious, but I needed to get there before them so they wouldn't smell any change in the atmosphere. I'll already be there.

I saw armed men lined the walkway that led to one of the offices. The meeting would be going on there. Giving them a smile, I walked past, headed for the back court yard, near the staff quarters.

Every guard in the lodge assumed I smoked each time I did this, and they just left me alone.

But they had no idea that it only happened when the Mayor had a guest I was interested in.

And this was one, was of utmost importance, and not just because he's my mate. Aunt Lisa would be pleased when I reported back to her that our plans were already working.

Sliding to the ground, I pressed my ears against the wall.

“You didn’t have to come all the way here, powerful Alphas like you usually just send a representative,” the mayor said.

I could imagine the great smile on his wiry face.

“I can’t be here for too long,” the stranger wolf murmured.

Everything in me stopped as I pressed my ears further against the wall.

“I totally understand, Alpha Lucian. And I know you are here to take a record of the rogues that have settled here in Wood Creek. But there has been no report of unusual strength or speed or super hearing.”

“That’s strange,” he mused, “there's been sightings around this area. Any attacks in the woods?”

"Great, then. I guess I'd better take my leave."

Chairs scraped the ground, and I guessed they were both on their feet now. But I couldn’t leave just yet. I hadn’t heard what I came here for.

"The volunteers have enlisted to fight for Wood Creek when the attacks get closer,” the Mayor reported as they headed out. “And I have to say that they are learning fast. I have my eyes on a certain lady. Iris. Her fire is second to none."

Oh dear, that's not a good idea. Telling him my name, that is. I wish I'd listened to my aunt and changed the damn thing.

“Don’t hesitate to request help from the council if need be,” he replied, heading towards the door.

"Thank you, Alpha Lucian. And I wish the Blue Moon Pack safety in these times."

The Blue Moon Pack. I knew it.

That was why he felt so familiar.

I'd been trying to figure out why his face invoked so much anger and lust from me.

The lust I understood the second Nyx announced what he meant to us but now that he'd mentioned that horrible pack, it all came into startling focus.

The face of an older version of him, sliding a sharp metal across my brother's neck.
