Chapter 6 Seeing Diana

"Mr. Windsor, these two children were brought to the event by a woman. She wore a mask the entire time, making identification impossible."

They had cross-referenced every woman who had shown her face at the event, but none matched.

After delivering his report, Nathan cautiously glanced up at Charles.

Compared to the people at the event, Nathan actually thought these two children bore some resemblance to Charles.

Especially those eyes, they were nearly identical.

If a woman suddenly burst in claiming these were Charles's illegitimate children, Nathan would be inclined to believe her.

"Is this the answer you're giving me?" After a long silence, Charles spoke in a low voice.

His tone carried an inherent authority.

Sitting beside him, Daisy felt the intimidating aura Charles radiated and couldn't help but shudder.

Jason immediately raised his small hand and patted Daisy's back.

"Don't be scared, Daisy. I'm here."

Jason's deliberately lowered voice still reached Charles's ears.

Charles frowned slightly.

These two little troublemakers who seemed afraid of nothing were actually scared?

"I've expanded the investigation scope and assigned additional personnel to continue the search," Nathan replied with his head down.

"These two children came from the VIP lounge downstairs, and we..."

"Jason! Daisy!"

A frantic shout from the distance interrupted Nathan's report.

Layla strode purposefully through the open door, steeling herself as she rushed over like a whirlwind.

Daisy's eyes lit up, opening her mouth to call out.

But Layla had already darted forward in one swift movement, gathering Daisy into her arms.

"Daisy, you nearly scared Mommy to death! Today's event is crawling with all sorts of people. What would Mommy do if something happened to you?"

Following Diana's instructions, Layla deliberately raised her voice to drown out whatever Daisy was about to say.

She also intentionally projected her voice when addressing Jason.

"Jason, you two really scared Mommy to death!"

After speaking, Layla's eyes welled up with tears, and she couldn't help crying as she held the two kids.

"Mommy, we were wrong."

Jason's quick mind caught on instantly, cleverly playing along.

The two children took turns confessing their mistakes, nestled in Layla's embrace.

Nathan tried to continue his report several times but was cut off each time.

Layla had hoped to leave just like that.

But Charles's gaze had already locked onto her.

She felt his eyes boring into her back.

Layla took a deep breath.

She turned around and stood her ground.

Then she thanked Charles.

"Thank you, Mr. Windsor, for looking after my two children. If they did anything inappropriate, I'm willing to make amends on their behalf."

After receiving no response for quite some time, Layla felt uncertain.

She couldn't help but shift her gaze to Nathan.

Layla repeated her formal words, cutting and revising them slightly.

Nathan looked helpless.

Layla ignored him, tugging at Jason's shirt corner. Jason immediately joined in the apology.

Daisy, naturally, followed suit.

Charles watched the group before him, all bowing their heads in apology yet constantly making small movements, and suddenly found it tedious.

"Get out." Charles barked harshly.

Layla's apology stopped abruptly, and she quickly pulled Jason and Daisy away.

Only after walking a considerable distance did Layla finally breathe a sigh of relief.

"How did you end up there? Do you know who he is? Cross him, and no one can save you!"

Charles was well-known. The Windsor family was a prestigious lineage, and their wealth combined with his ability made him a unique figure.

Jason pressed his lips together, frowning as he tugged at Layla's hand.

"Layla, where's Mommy? Is Mommy okay now?"

He didn't care about Charles; he was more worried about Diana.

"Mommy must have noticed we were gone."

Daisy's eyes also reddened.

"Jason, will Mommy be angry?"

Jason's small shoulders immediately slumped, his steps growing heavier.

"Layla, let's hurry back. Mommy will be worried."

Hearing Jason and Daisy's words, Layla didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

In the end, she said nothing more and instead quickened her pace along with them.

The atmosphere in the VIP lounge was suffocating.

Ever since the two children left, it felt like the air could freeze.

"Mr. Windsor, the board meeting is in one hour. We need to leave now. The car is waiting downstairs at the entrance, and we..."

Nathan delivered the upcoming schedule under pressure.

Meanwhile, Jason and Daisy flanked Diana, clinging to her arms with red-rimmed eyes as they continuously apologized.

From the beginning of their plan until now, seeing Diana's pale complexion, the two kids finally understood fear.

Unlike their fake crying earlier, they were now crying with genuine heartbreak.

"Zoey, maybe you should forgive them this time!"

Layla rarely saw the two children cry so miserably and felt her heart soften.

After recovering from her fear, Diana looked at the two tear-stained faces and felt her heart melt long ago.

With Layla's persuasion, Diana slowly sighed.

"Let's go home first."

She decided to have a proper talk with these two little troublemakers about this incident once they got back.

Charles had just gotten into his car and was about to leave.

Glancing up casually, he froze in shock.

Nathan quickly noticed Charles's unusual behavior and followed his gaze, his own eyes widening in disbelief.

My God. He saw Diana!

He swallowed hard in shock, about to open his mouth to ask.

But Charles had already gotten out of the car, his cold demeanor completely vanishing as he frantically chased after her.

The person being pursued remained completely unaware, calmly getting into a stretch limo parked by the roadside.

The car disappeared into the distance.

Charles stood in place, his expression gradually returning to its cold state.

"Trace that car!"

Nathan had just steadied himself and was now making calls breathlessly to arrange the investigation.

As night fell, the streets outside remained bustling with traffic.

Charles stood expressionlessly by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his pupils dark as ink.

He listened quietly to Nathan's report.

"Mr. Windsor, the car is registered to a man named Donovan Hughes. The license was only issued this past April. Donovan just moved here this year; he currently owns a small company dealing in medical equipment."

Nathan spoke while handing Charles the organized materials he'd collected.

"We investigated the car's usage history during this period and Donovan's social network. Everything is compiled in this report."

The more Nathan spoke, the more uncertain he became, keeping his head down throughout, not daring to meet Charles's eyes.

Charles didn't spare him a glance, cutting straight to the point.

"Was it Diana?"

Five years ago, after that car accident, Diana had vanished without a trace.

Nathan's mouth twitched as he heavily answered, "No."

He wanted this person to be Diana even more than Charles did.

Who knew how they'd survived these past five years?

Charles had spared no expense in manpower, resources, or money with only one goal: to find Diana.

But Diana seemed to have vanished into thin air, leaving no trace behind.
