Chapter 5 Edges Of Control

The next two days blurred into what was a delicious rhythm that felt both natural and also dangerously addictive.

Alex and I texted constantly and the small things he did made my heart skip. A good morning message about the light, a photo of my latest edit with his subtle feedback, or him offering to bring dinner because “you’ve been working too hard again.”

Every interaction pulled me deeper. He was quickly becoming the bright spot in my new life, the one person who made the shadows of Marco and ShadowWatcher feel distant. I felt so lucky in a weird way.

Tonight, I had invited him over for another test shoot. The studio lights were set low and moody. They cast intimate shadows across the living room where we stayed. I chose deep crimson and black tones for the backdrop. My pulse was already racing when the knock came at exactly seven.

Or maybe it was a minute after seven, I couldn't tell.

I opened the door to find Alex looking sinfully good in a black button-down shirt with his sleeves rolled up to reveal those strong forearms. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and the moment his eyes landed on me - I was in a loose tank top, leggings, and my hair was in a messy bun - it seemed like something hungry flickered across his face.

“Ready for me?” he asked, his voice low and smooth as he stepped inside.

The double meaning wasn’t lost on me.

“Always,” I replied, my cheeks warming.

“Come see the setup.”

He followed me in, his presence filling the space. We started slow. I directed him against the backdrop, adjusting the lights while trying to keep my hands steady. The shutter clicked rhythmically as I circled him, giving soft commands.

“Shoulders back… chin slightly down… yes, just like that.”

Alex was a dream subject for any photographer - completely natural and responsive to every instruction. By the third setup, I asked him to lose the shirt. He peeled it off without hesitation, revealing the sculpted lines of his chest and abdomen. A hint of dark ink teased above his waistband. My mouth went dry.

I moved closer, my camera raised.

“Turn toward the light. Eyes on me.”

He obeyed, locking his gaze onto the lens -onto me. The intensity made heat pool low in my belly. I stepped in to adjust his shoulder, my fingers brushing his warm, bare skin. He didn’t flinch. Instead, his hand came up, covering mine, his thumb stroking slowly over my knuckles.

“You’re trembling again,” he murmured.

“It’s the lighting,” I lied softly.

His lips curved in what wasn't really a smile.

“Liar.”

The tension had been building for days, and it felt like it finally snapped. I lowered the camera. Alex moved first, backing me against the table with deliberate steps. One hand of his braced beside my hip while the other cupped my jaw.

“You have no idea what you do to me during these shoots,” he said, his voice rough.

“Every time you look at me like that… like you want to capture more than just the surface.”

Our lips crashed together.

The kiss started deep and needy - what seemed like weeks of restrained desire finally pouring out. His mouth was hot, demanding, and his tongue teasing mine as he pulled me flush against his bare chest. I moaned softly as my nails scraped down the hard muscle of his back. He tasted like mint and something darker - something more addictive.

His hands roamed ... first, siding under my tank top, his palms hot against my waist, and then higher. I arched into him, feeling the hard press of his body, the unmistakable evidence of how much he wanted me.

He broke the kiss only to trail his lips down my neck, sucking lightly at my pulse point, his teeth grazing in a way that made my knees weak.

“Tell me to stop, Sophia,” he whispered against my skin, his breath ragged. One hand slipped lower, gripping my hip possessively.

“Or don’t. I’ve wanted this since the moment I saw you in the hallway.”

I didn’t tell him to stop. Instead, I pulled his mouth back to mine, kissing him harder, lost in both the heat and the strength of him. The photoshoot equipment faded into the background. There was only Alex in that moment ... his scent, his touch, and the low growls vibrating in his chest as our bodies moved together.

We were seconds away from losing all control when ...

CRASH.

A violent sound shattered the moment. It was wood splintering. Something heavy was slamming against the front door.

We froze, lips still inches apart, breathing hard.

“What the hell?” I whispered.

We heard another brutal kick. The doorframe groaned.

“Sophia!” Marco’s furious voice roared from the hallway.

“I know you’re in there! Open this fucking door right now!”

Alex’s entire demeanor changed in an instant. The passionate, hungry man vanished. His body went rigid and his muscles coiled like he was a predator. That charming warmth in his eyes turned to something cold, sharp, and terrifyingly calm. He gently but firmly moved me behind him, shielding me with his broad frame.

“Stay back,” he ordered, his voice low and commanding. There was no trace of the neighbor who had just been kissing me senseless.

This was someone else entirely.

My heart hammered.

“Alex, he has a gun. Please don’t...”

A final, powerful kick exploded the lock. The door flew open, banging against the wall.

Marco stormed in, his eyes bloodshot with rage. His gaze locked first on Alex - shirtless, breathing hard, hair messy from my fingers - then on me, flushed and disheveled behind him.

“You fucking whore,” Marco snarled, his hand moving towards the gun tucked at his waistband.

“You barely moved out and you’re already spreading your legs for the first guy who smiles at you?”

The temperature in the room plummeted. Alex stepped forward, placing himself fully between me and my ex. His posture radiated lethal control.

“Leave,” Alex said, his voice dangerously quiet.

“Now. Before you do something that you can’t take back.”

Marco laughed, but it was edged with uncertainty as he sized up the taller, more imposing man in front of him.

“Who the hell are you? Her new bodyguard?”

The air crackled with violence. I stood frozen, chest heaving, my lips still tingling from Alex’s kiss, watching in horror as the two men faced off in my living room.

This wasn’t just a jealous ex showing up.

Something far more dangerous was unfolding right in front of me.

And Alex… the man I was falling for… suddenly didn’t feel like a safe neighbor at all.
