Chapter 4 Frames Of Desire

The next morning, I woke up with a strange lightness in my chest. Sunlight spilled across my bed, and for the first time in months, I didn’t immediately reach for my phone to check for new threats from Marco or from ShadowWatcher.

Instead, my mind drifted to the test shots that I had taken of Alex the night before.

I spent most of the morning editing them. Each frame made my breath catch a little.

I could not help but notice the way the light carved across his jawline and the quiet intensity in his dark eyes as he stared straight into the lens - straight into me.

He looked powerful and also controlled. Beautiful in a way that felt almost dangerous.

By late afternoon, I had convinced myself to text him.

"Hey, you still up for that test shoot sometime? I have a free evening."

His reply came within minutes.

"Alex: Tonight works. What time?"

A flutter of nerves hit me as I typed back.

"7pm? Come over whenever."

I spent the next two hours attempting to turn my living room into a proper mini studio - adjusting lights, choosing a dark charcoal backdrop, and picking out a few simple props. I then changed into a comfortable black tank top and loose linen pants - something practical for moving around during the shoot.

At exactly 7:05, a knock sounded.

I opened the door to find Alex standing there, looking unfairly good in a plain white t-shirt that stretched across his broad chest and dark jeans. His hair was slightly tousled, like he had run his fingers through it.

“Hi,” I said, stepping aside, trying to hide any emotion.

“Thanks for coming on short notice.”

“Wouldn’t miss it.”

His voice was low and warm. As he passed me, his arm brushed mine, sending a small spark across my skin.

“You’ve been busy.”

I laughed softly.

“A little. Come and see.”

He followed me into the living room, his eyes scanning the setup with what seemed to be genuine interest.

“This is impressive. You really transformed the space.”

We started simple. I directed him to stand against the backdrop while I adjusted the lighting.

“Relax your shoulders… good. Tilt your head slightly to the right. Perfect.”

The shutter clicked steadily as I circled him, crouching low for different angles. Alex was incredibly natural in front of the camera. He didn't offer any stiffness or awkward poses. Every time I looked up from behind the lens, his gaze was already on me.

“Turn towards me more,” I instructed, stepping closer.

“Eyes here.”

He obeyed, locking his stare onto mine. The intensity made my fingers fumble slightly on the shutter button. Up close like this, I could see the faint shadow of stubble along his jaw and the way his t-shirt clung to the hard lines of his chest.

“You’re really good at this,” I murmured. It was more to myself than it was to him.

“At standing still?” he asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.

“At making the camera fall in love with you.”

The words slipped out before I could stop them. Heat rose to my cheeks. Alex’s expression shifted, something darker and hungrier running across his face for a brief second before his usual charming smile returned.

“Well, careful, Sophia. Compliments like that might make me want to stay longer.”

I swallowed and stepped back, pretending to adjust a light.

“Let’s try a few seated poses.”

He moved to the stool that I had set up. As I leaned in to fix the angle of his shoulder, my hand brushed the warm skin of his arm. He didn’t pull away. Instead, he caught my wrist gently, his thumb stroking once over my pulse point.

“You’re trembling,” he said softly.

“Are you nervous?”

“A little,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.

“It’s been a while since I’ve worked with someone who… affects me like this.”

His grip lingered for a heartbeat longer than necessary before he released me.

“That's good. I like affecting you.”

The air between us grew thick.

I took several more shots, my heart beating faster with each click. At one point, I asked him to remove his t-shirt for a few artistic torso shots. He didn’t hesitate, pulling it off in one smooth motion, revealing a sculpted chest and the hint of a tattoo peeking just above his waistband.

I forgot how to breathe for a moment.

“Like this?” he asked, his voice rougher now as he leaned forward slightly, his muscles shifting under the lights.

“Yes,” I whispered. “Just like that.”

The photoshoot stretched longer than planned. Every adjustment of his pose brought us closer. His hand would brush my hip when I moved around him. My fingers would graze his skin while correcting an angle. The tension built up slow and inevitable, like a slow-burning flame.

When we finally wrapped up, I was flushed and a little breathless. Alex pulled his shirt back on but didn’t make any move to leave.

“These are going to be incredible,” I said, scrolling through the images on my camera.

“You have no idea how perfect you are for this.”

He stepped closer, looking over my shoulder at the screen. His chest brushed my back, warm and solid.

“I’m glad you think so. I’d do it again. Anytime you want me… here. Like this.”

The double meaning in his words wasn’t lost on me. I turned to face him, suddenly very aware of how little space remained between us. His eyes dropped to my lips for a fraction of a second.

“Alex…” I started, not even sure of what I wanted to say.

He lifted a hand, brushing a stray hair away from my face with a surprising gentleness.

“You don’t have to say anything tonight. Just know I’m right across the hall if you need me. For anything.”

The promise in his voice sent heat pooling low in my stomach. He lingered a moment longer, then stepped back with visible restraint.

“Thank you for tonight, Sophia. Sleep well.”

The door clicked shut behind him.

I stood there for a long time, camera still in my hands and my heart racing too quickly. Alex was quickly becoming more than just a helpful neighbor.

He was becoming something I wasn’t sure I was ready for ...

But something that I desperately wanted anyway.
