Chapter 2 New Walls, Old Shadows

The next morning, sunlight streamed through Mia’s living room windows, but it did little to chase away the heaviness in my chest. I sat at her small kitchen table, nursing a cup of coffee while scrolling through apartment listings on my laptop. Marco had already started texting from unknown numbers. Texts of apologies mixed with demands. I silenced my phone and tried to focus.

Mia slid a plate of toast in front of me.

“You’re not staying on my couch forever because you're a legend in the making, girl! I found something. High-end building, great security, and the rent is way below market. We can view it this morning.”

I hesitated, remembering the low price from the listing.

“It sounds too good to be true.”

“After the hell you’ve been through with Marco? The universe owes you one. Come on, Soph. New place with a fresh energy for your photography.”

An hour later, we stood in the sleek lobby of a modern building in a quieter part of the city. The leasing agent led us to the eighth floor and opened the door to unit 8B. Warm natural light flooded the open living space through floor-to-ceiling windows.

The hardwood floors gleamed, and the kitchen island was perfect for all of my styling shots. It felt safe and spacious. Exactly what I needed.

“This is beautiful,” I murmured, walking to the windows. My mind was already thinking of how the light would be incredible for portraits.

Mia was already exploring the bedroom.

“Soph, this is it. You could build a whole studio setup right here.”

I turned to the agent and asked,

"Is there a catch? Why is the price so low?"

The agent smiled.

“The previous tenant left suddenly without his time being up. The owner wants it rented quickly to the right person and doesn't mind taking a pay cut. Your background check looked very good.”

As we discussed details, the door across the hall opened.

A man stepped out, tall and broad-shouldered, with neatly styled hair and sharp, striking features. He wore a fitted black button-down that hinted at a powerful build underneath it.

When his gaze landed on me, something shifted in the air. It was subtle but undeniable.

Mia, ever bold, waved immediately.

“Hi! We’re viewing the apartment next door. I’m Mia, this is Sophia.”

He offered a slow, easy smile that softened the intensity of his face. There was something strangely familiar about him, but I brushed it off. I had been paranoid for months.

“Alex,” he replied, his voice low and smooth with a faint accent. His eyes stayed on me.

“You thinking of moving in?”

“Hopefully,” I said, adjusting the strap of my ever-present camera bag.

“The light in here is chef's kiss perfect.”

Alex glanced at the bag, then back at my face.

“Photographer?”

I nodded, surprised.

“Yeah. How did you guess?”

“The way you’re studying the windows like they’re the most important thing in the room.”

He paused.

"And also maybe because of that", he said, gesturing to my camera.

I blushed.

"Oh."

His smile deepened, warm yet confident.

“This building has some of the best natural light I’ve seen. It's great for creative work.”

We stood in the hallway for several minutes, the conversation flowing more easily than I expected. Alex was attentive, asking thoughtful questions about my work without being pushy.

There was a quiet strength in how he carried himself, a calm presence that made the hallway feel smaller and warmer. When he mentioned the building’s security features - the doorman, the cameras, the keycard access - I felt some of my tension ease.

The agent cleared her throat.

“So, what do you think?”

I didn’t hesitate this time.

“I’ll take it.”

Moving day arrived quickly. Boxes and bags cluttered the elevator as Mia and I made trip after trip. I was struggling with a particularly heavy box of lighting equipment when Alex appeared from his unit.

“Need a hand?” he asked, already reaching for it.

Before I could protest, he lifted the box effortlessly, muscles shifting under his shirt.

“Neighborly duty,” he added with that same easy smile.

He helped for the next hour - carrying furniture, positioning heavier items exactly where I wanted them, and being careful with my camera gear. His presence was steady and reassuring.

When everything was inside, I insisted on ordering Italian takeout as a way to show my gratitude.

We sat at the kitchen island, the city lights beginning to sparkle outside the windows. Steam rose from containers of pasta and garlic bread. The conversation came naturally. He listened intently as I talked about my Instagram work and my dream of a solo exhibition, his dark eyes focused completely on me.

“You’re very protective of your cameras,” he observed quietly, watching as I adjusted a lens on the counter.

“They’re my way of seeing the world,” I replied.

“Capturing moments others might miss. Making sense of the chaos.”

Alex’s gaze lingered.

“Some things are worth protecting fiercely.”

His voice had a deeper edge that sent a small, unexpected flutter through my stomach.

The air between us felt charged as we finished eating. When he finally stood to leave, he paused at the door.

'If you need anything - whether it's help hanging pictures, recommendations for the area, or just someone to talk to - I’m right across the hall.”

“Thank you, Alex. Really.”

He gave me one last look, that intense yet charming smile in place.

“Anytime, Sophia.”

The door clicked shut behind him. I leaned against the counter, exhaling slowly. For the first time in weeks, my apartment didn’t feel empty or threatening.

It felt like possibility.

I unpacked a few more boxes, then set up my camera by the window to test the night light. A small, cautious warmth bloomed in my chest.

Maybe this really was the fresh start I needed.
