Chapter 9 The Surveillance Footage Recorded Her False Accusation
"I didn't push her, and I had no reason to," Aurora explained calmly.
But these simple words only made Oliver angrier.
He looked down at Claire in his arms, her eyes red and teary, then glared up at Aurora, the disgust in his eyes almost consuming her.
"Aurora, what else do you have to say for yourself? If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I might have actually believed your story. If anything happens to Claire, I'll never let you off."
As soon as he finished speaking, he scooped Claire up in his arms.
Claire quickly wrapped her arms around his neck, then softly comforted Oliver. "Oliver, just let it go! Maybe Aurora was just acting on impulse. I'm fine, really. My elbow just hurts a little."
Her retreat only made Oliver feel more sorry for her.
"I'm taking you to the hospital for a checkup."
The two talked as if no one else was there. Oliver simply carried Claire away, leaving Aurora standing alone in the conference room.
In the empty conference room, Aurora felt her vision going dark, and a faint cramping pain came from her lower abdomen.
She quickly grabbed the desk and slowly sat down in a chair. After calming herself for a while, she gradually recovered.
Thinking about what had just happened, Aurora couldn't help but smile bitterly.
So in Oliver's eyes, she was a bad woman who couldn't measure up to Claire in any way—jealous and willing to do anything.
While no one knew about her condition, Oliver rushed Claire to the hospital.
Fortunately, after examination, Claire only had minor scratches on her fingers and was otherwise fine.
However, due to Oliver's strong insistence, the doctor still admitted her to the hospital.
In the hospital room, Claire sat on the bed, watching Oliver busying himself, her eyes full of satisfaction.
She gently took Oliver's hand and said softly, "Oliver, I know Aurora only has such hostility toward me because she's uncomfortable from being pregnant. Don't blame her. It's just... the way she looked at me just now was really scary."
As if worried her manipulation wasn't enough, Claire touched her own belly, her face showing some lingering fear.
Oliver's face showed even more anger.
"She's only so bold because of the baby in her belly! This time she dared to push you—who knows what she'll do next time! You were lucky this time and dodged a bullet, but what if there's a next time?"
As Oliver spoke, Aurora's calm expression from earlier flashed through his mind, making him even more furious.
"Her hostility toward you is because of me. Claire, I will never let her wrong you. Don't be afraid, I'll go talk to her right now."
Seeing Oliver looking like he was about to immediately go settle accounts with Aurora, Claire's heart jumped, and she quickly grabbed his arm.
"Oliver, I know you care about me, and that's enough. After all, I came back and took her place. It's natural that she's unwilling and angry at me. I should accept it."
Tears quickly fell from Claire's eyes. Her words put herself in the position of the victim, making anyone who heard it feel sorry for her.
"I still need you to take care of me here. Please don't go, okay? I'm so scared of being alone. If someone came to hurt me now, I wouldn't even have the strength to fight back."
Claire sobbed softly, breaking Oliver's heart and making him resent Aurora even more.
Just as he was about to comfort Claire, the hospital room door was suddenly pushed open, and Aurora appeared in the doorway.
Both of them instinctively looked at her and saw her holding up a USB drive.
"No need to come find me—I'm already here. Whatever it is, let's clear it up once and for all today, so certain people stop throwing dirt on me."
Aurora stood with her back straight, her voice firm and strong.
Oliver looked at her pale face and froze for a moment, his brows furrowed.
"Are you here to upset Claire? I saw what happened today with my own eyes. What else do you have to say?"
Aurora ignored him and simply stepped forward, tossing the USB drive onto the cabinet beside the bed.
"I pulled the law firm's surveillance footage. The video clearly shows who made the first move in the conference room and who deliberately fell. You believe her, don't you? Then watch it yourself and see whether I pushed her or not."
Her determined manner made Oliver suspicious.
And when Claire heard the word "surveillance," her expression changed instantly.
Panic flashed in her eyes, and she instinctively tightened her grip on Oliver's hand. "Oliver, I didn't frame her. Could Aurora be misunderstanding me? As for the law firm's surveillance, maybe there's an angle issue."
Her instinctive defense only increased Oliver's doubt.
He looked at Claire beside him, then at Aurora standing with her arms crossed in the distance. He picked up the USB drive and walked to the sofa.
The private room had a sofa and coffee table, like a living room at home.
And on the coffee table sat a laptop computer.
He had asked his assistant to bring it for work.
In Oliver's mind, Claire's injury was his fault, and he had to take responsibility for caring for her. He never expected that by chance, the computer would actually come in handy.
He plugged in the USB drive and clicked on the video.
The surveillance footage clearly recorded everything that had just happened, the content crystal clear.
In the video, you could clearly see Claire taking the initiative to provoke, grabbing Aurora's wrist, then loosening her grip and falling toward the desk, even deliberately exaggerating the fall.
Meanwhile, Aurora stood in place the whole time, without any pushing motion.
Not only that, but when Claire was about to fall, Aurora instinctively reached out to catch her.
What happened next was exactly what Oliver had seen.
Everything in the footage was completely different from Claire's account and worlds apart from the "facts" Oliver had witnessed with his own eyes.
Oliver's expression grew darker and darker. He turned to look at Claire, doubt appearing in his eyes for the first time.
In his original understanding, Aurora was the bad woman who deliberately pushed Claire, and he was her "savior."
If he hadn't appeared, Claire would have already been hurt.
But the truth didn't seem to be like that at all.
"Claire, what's going on here?"
Meeting his gaze, Claire couldn't help but panic.
