Chapter 8 Job Snatched Away

The car sped along, but no one spoke inside.

The silence was almost suffocating.

Aurora had expected Oliver not to trust her, but she never imagined he would pin all the blame entirely on her.

So in Oliver's eyes, she was this unworthy of trust.

A bitter smile appeared on Aurora's lips as her hand unconsciously moved to her lower abdomen.

She turned to look at the street scene rapidly retreating outside the window, her vision gradually blurring.

Since the last failed cornea transplant, her eyesight had been getting worse and worse lately.

The two remained silent throughout the journey. Oliver dropped Aurora off at Scarlett's apartment complex and drove away immediately.

Aurora forced herself to go home and rest.

The next day at work, the redness in her eyes hadn't completely faded, and her vision was hazy.

"Attorney Sinclair, what are you doing here?"

Aurora stood at the entrance of the law firm. The secretary coming toward her looked shocked when she recognized her face.

"I'm here to follow up on that previous case."

Although Aurora couldn't see the person's face clearly, she knew who she was talking to.

"But isn't this case already..."

The secretary hesitated, then left as if escaping.

"Attorney Sinclair, if you have time, you should probably go to the conference room! They should still be in a meeting."

Her parting words left Aurora feeling uneasy.

Aurora felt her way in the direction she remembered. The conference room door was half open, with voices occasionally drifting out.

She took a deep breath and knocked.

The meeting was interrupted. Someone inside sounded impatient. "Who is it?"

As soon as he finished speaking, Attorney Lee, who opened the door, froze on the spot.

He looked at Aurora in disbelief, then turned back to glance at another woman sitting in the conference room.

Attorney Lee scratched his head awkwardly, forced a smile, and asked Aurora why she was there. "Attorney Sinclair, what brings you here?"

"I'm here to follow up on that previous case."

Aurora was still holding a document. As she responded, she instinctively glanced inside.

She vaguely felt that the sitting woman's figure seemed somewhat familiar.

"Attorney Sinclair, thank you for making the trip. However, this case has now been assigned to me, so there's no need for you to worry about it."

When the person spoke, Aurora's body stiffened. She immediately realized who it was.

Claire! It was actually her!

But what did she just say?

Aurora suppressed the ominous feeling in her heart and looked at Claire. "Ms. Bennett, I don't understand what you mean."

Claire sneered at her struggling appearance.

But to maintain her image in front of others, she covered her mouth with a fake laugh and explained the current situation.

"Attorney Sinclair, you should know I studied law abroad. Now that I'm back, I naturally need to find a job. Brighton & Co. Law Firm's boss happened to invite me. So we're colleagues now."

Claire's simple explanation carried rich implications.

"Though I didn't expect the lawyer replaced by the client would be you."

Aurora was left with nothing but shock.

She had thought today would just be a routine pre-trial meeting, but instead she learned that Claire had stolen her job.

"Ms. Bennett is not a licensed attorney, which probably doesn't meet the requirements." Aurora pointed out the flaw.

"Whether it's proper or not isn't for Attorney Sinclair to judge." Claire stepped forward, leaning close to her ear, her voice cold. "Aurora, you're pregnant and signed divorce papers. You must be too busy to handle everything! Why hold onto work so tightly? Instead of wasting time here, you should go home and think about how to win Oliver back."

"That's none of your concern." Aurora's hand clenched into a fist. She didn't want to get entangled with her.

She had just stepped back when Claire grabbed her.

Claire held Aurora with one hand and turned to look at the stunned Attorney Lee.

"Attorney Lee, Attorney Sinclair and I are old friends. I'd like to catch up with her, if that's okay?"

She asked with a smile, but her tone carried a hint of threat.

"Of course."

Attorney Lee adjusted his glasses, cast a pitying glance at Aurora, then turned and left.

This was beyond what he could get involved in. Aurora was on her own!

After Attorney Lee left, Claire directly let go of Aurora's hand.

She stepped forward and blocked the conference room door.

"I heard that if you abort a child, you'll be infertile for life. I don't know if it's true or not. Why don't you enlighten me?" She stared at Aurora mockingly.

"My private affairs are none of your business." Aurora didn't take the bait and pushed open the other side of the door to leave.

Claire gripped her hand tightly. "Aurora, I'm not done catching up with you. Where are you going? I thought you had some sense, knew you were just a discarded pawn, and wouldn't dare interfere between Oliver and me anymore. But I didn't expect you to get pregnant at this critical moment and pretend you can't abort it. Aurora, do you think Oliver is easy to fool? Do you think I am too?!"

Thinking about Aurora's unexpected pregnancy ruining all her plans made Claire's teeth itch with hatred.

She absolutely couldn't lose Oliver.

No one could take him from her!

"Ms. Bennett, since you also understand law, you should know that everything you say carries legal responsibility. Slandering others without proof, even destroying others' families—is this your upbringing?"

Aurora knew she was deliberately provoking her, but she wasn't willing to just swallow her anger.

Claire raised her arm high, but from the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a figure at the door.

She yanked Aurora's hand hard and let herself fall backward.

"Ah—"

Claire cried out. Aurora instinctively tried to catch her, but was slapped away.

At that critical moment, the conference room door was yanked open.

"Claire!"

His brow furrowed as he strode over, but still couldn't catch Claire's hand.

"Bang—"

Claire fell hard to the ground, her elbow turning red. She looked at Oliver with tears in her eyes.

"Oliver, I..."

Tears fell before she could speak, looking heartbreaking.

Oliver quickly helped her up, holding her protectively while checking her carefully.

After confirming Claire wasn't seriously hurt, he suddenly looked up at Aurora, his eyes full of disgust.

"Aurora, haven't you caused enough trouble? I thought you were just stubborn, but I didn't expect you to be this vicious! Claire just came to work on the case. How dare you lay hands on her?"
