Chapter 14 Trial of the Origin

Kael froze mid-step on the crumbling staircase. His hand tightened around his mother’s waist while Vanya pressed close on his other side. The pull from the Origin Core grew stronger with every level they descended. It called to the void inside him like a long-lost lover hungry for reunion.

Vanya looked up at him her amber eyes wide with worry. “Kael? What is it? You look like you just heard a ghost.”

He exhaled slowly trying to steady the violent churning in his chest. “It spoke to me. The Origin Core. It wants me to prove myself.”

Queen Marra’s breathing was shallow but her grip on his arm remained firm. Even exhausted and bleeding she carried herself with quiet royal strength. “The core judges blood and soul. You carry both now my son. Let our bond give you strength.”

Kael nodded. The warmth of their presence beside him helped push back the growing hunger. For fourteen years he had walked alone with only Malkin’s brutal training and cold power. Now every touch from his mother every fierce look from Vanya filled cracks he never knew existed. It felt terrifying. It felt right.

They continued downward. The staircase spiraled deeper into the heart of the Obsidian Keep. Ancient glowing runes lit the walls pulsing in rhythm with the distant battle above. The sounds of the spectral wolf and the Heart of the Moon tearing at each other shook dust from the ceiling with every roar.

A section of the stairs suddenly collapsed ahead of them. Kael reacted instantly wrapping both women in a gentle vacuum field and leaping across the gap. When they landed Vanya let out a shaky laugh despite everything. “You’re getting better at this protective big brother thing.”

Kael’s lips twitched in the smallest hint of a smile. “I am learning fast.”

They reached a wide chamber filled with towering stone pillars carved with the history of the lycan empire. In the center floated a massive crystalline orb pulsing with golden-silver light. The Origin Core. Streams of pure ancestral qi flowed from it like living veins connecting to every corner of the keep.

The voice returned stronger this time. “Approach child. Show me why the void should not erase you.”

Kael stepped forward. The moment his foot touched the central platform the chamber reacted. The crystalline orb flared brightly and six spectral guardians materialized around them. These were not the massive beasts from above. These were elegant ethereal wolves formed entirely of condensed origin qi each one radiating power equal to a peak alpha.

Vanya shifted into her wolf form instantly silver-gray fur bristling. “More of them. Great.”

Queen Marra stood tall beside her son despite her wounds. “We face this as family.”

The first spectral guardian attacked Kael with blinding speed. He met it with an open palm. Their powers clashed violet void against golden origin. The impact sent ripples through the chamber. Kael absorbed part of its essence but immediately redirected the excess away from his mother and sister. The strain showed in the tightness of his jaw and the sweat running down his neck.

Vanya leaped at another guardian her claws slashing through its ethereal form. “You won’t take him from us!” she snarled voice thick with protective fury. Every strike carried her love her guilt and her refusal to lose the brother she had just gained.

Marra channeled her remaining qi creating soft golden barriers that slowed the guardians’ movements. “Fight with your heart Kael. Not just your power.”

Kael moved like a storm anchored by family. He dismantled one guardian with a precise vacuum collapse while using gravitational force to slam another into a pillar. But the more he fought the louder the Origin Core’s voice grew in his mind.

“You carry stolen blood. The void rejects all lineage. Why should I allow you to claim this throne?”

Pain flared behind Kael’s eyes. The void inside him surged responding to the challenge. It wanted to devour everything the core the guardians even the keep itself. His vision blurred for a moment as he fought for control.

Vanya noticed immediately. She finished her opponent and rushed to his side pressing her forehead against his shoulder. “Hey. Stay with us. Remember the forest when you saved me? You didn’t know who I was but you still protected me. That’s who you are.”

Her words her closeness cut through the chaos. Kael breathed deeply pulling strength from her presence. “I remember.”

Queen Marra joined them placing her hand over both their hearts. “You were torn from my arms the night you were born. I screamed until my voice broke. Every day in that cell I dreamed of this moment. Do not let the void steal our second chance.”

Tears stung Kael’s eyes. The raw love in their voices filled the emptiness that had defined him for so long. The void calmed settling into something more controlled. More purposeful.

He turned toward the floating Origin Core. “I am not here to erase your bloodlines. I am here to claim what is mine by birth. The wolves rejected me. But I will not reject them.”

The chamber responded. The remaining spectral guardians merged into two larger forms. These new entities attacked with coordinated precision forcing Kael to fight at his absolute limit. He shielded his family while striking back with devastating void techniques. Violet energy clashed with golden light in brilliant explosions that lit up the ancient chamber.

Logan’s voice suddenly echoed from the entrance to the chamber. The usurper had followed them down bloodied and desperate. “You think you can claim the core boy? It will destroy you first!”

He unleashed a final desperate attack channeling every ounce of his stolen royal power. A massive crimson blade of qi hurtled toward Queen Marra.

Vanya threw herself in front of her mother taking the hit across her back. She cried out collapsing to the ground blood spreading rapidly.

“VANYA!” Kael roared. The sound tore from his throat raw with pain and rage.

Seeing his sister fall ignited something primal inside him. The void surged but this time it felt different. Fueled by love instead of emptiness. He caught Vanya before she hit the floor cradling her gently. “Stay with me sister. Please.”

Marra dropped beside them tears flowing freely. “My daughter. Hold on.”

Kael’s eyes burned with cold fire as he looked at Logan. “You have taken enough from me.”

He gently set Vanya down and rose. The violet aura around him exploded into a blazing storm. In one fluid motion he crossed the chamber and slammed his palm against Logan’s chest. Divine Void Absorption. He tore the usurper’s power away in violent strands feeding it into his own core while protecting his family from the backlash.

Logan screamed as his cultivation crumbled. He dropped to his knees eyes wide with terror. “This… cannot be…”

Kael stood over him voice cold yet burning with emotion. “For my father. For my mother. For my sister. Your reign ends here.”

With a final pulse Logan’s body dissolved into violet particles vanishing completely.

The Origin Core pulsed brighter as if approving the act. The voice returned calmer now. “You protect your blood. Interesting. But the final trial remains. Enter me child of void. Face what lies at the true origin.”

The crystalline orb opened revealing a swirling portal of golden-silver light.

Kael returned to his mother and sister. He lifted Vanya carefully into his arms. She was still breathing but weak. Marra leaned against him exhausted but alive.

“We go together,” Kael said voice thick with determination and love. “No more separation.”

As they stepped toward the portal into the heart of the Origin Core a final massive tremor shook the entire keep. The battle between the spectral wolf and the Heart of the Moon had reached its peak above them. The Obsidian Keep itself seemed on the verge of total collapse.

Queen Marra looked at her son with tear-filled eyes full of pride and fear. “Whatever waits inside it has never faced someone like you. Someone who carries both void and heart.”

Kael held his wounded sister closer and supported his mother as they crossed the threshold. The light swallowed them completely.

Inside the true core a vast empty space stretched endlessly filled with floating ancient runes and streams of pure creation energy. At the center hovered a single perfect sphere of condensed primordial power.

The voice spoke one last time echoing all around them. “Only one may claim the Origin. The void… or the bloodline. Choose.”

Kael felt the immense pressure bearing down on him. The choice would define everything. His power. His family. His future.

But as Vanya stirred weakly in his arms and Marra squeezed his hand he already knew his answer.

He would not choose between them.

He would make the Origin accept both.
