Chapter 10 Echoes from the Depths
The thunder of approaching Guardians grew louder shaking the entire corridor like an earthquake. Kael stood with blood dripping from his mouth and shoulder yet his silver-blue eyes burned with a terrifying new intensity. The revelation from Vanya still hung heavy in the air between them.
Vanya reached him first. Her hands trembled as she grabbed his arm ignoring the fresh blood staining her fingers. Her chest felt like it would burst from the storm of emotions. Relief. Fear. Overwhelming love for this brother she had mourned without knowing. “Kael. Please. Say something.”
He looked down at her. For the first time, the cold mask on his face cracked. Not much. Just a flicker in those luminous eyes. Shock. Betrayal. And underneath it all something raw and dangerous that made her heart ache. “Your father threw me away like garbage,” he said voice low and edged with ice. “And you waited until now to tell me.”
“I was scared,” she whispered fiercely. Tears cut clean tracks through the dirt and blood on her face. “I didn’t know if you would hate me. Hate us. But you’re my brother. I felt it the moment I saw that pendant. I’ve waited fourteen years without knowing you existed.”
Before Kael could respond the first wave of Guardians burst into the corridor. Three massive beasts this time their howls shaking dust from the ceiling. Their crimson eyes locked on him with pure instinctual hatred.
Kael gently pushed Vanya behind him. His violet aura exploded outward stronger than before fueled by the storm inside his chest. “Stay back.”
He met the charge head-on. The lead Guardian swung its spiked arm in a devastating arc. Kael ducked under it and slammed his palm into the beast’s ribs. Void Absorption. Violet energy surged as he tore chunks of the Guardian’s life force straight into his Divine Void Dantian. The creature roared in agony its massive body shrinking slightly as flesh dissolved into swirling particles.
But the other two Guardians attacked together. One clamped its jaws around Kael’s leg while the second drove its bone spikes into his side. Pain flashed across his face sharp and real. He grunted but did not scream. Instead, he twisted his hands and unleashed a violent vacuum collapse. The two Guardians were yanked together violently their bodies crushing against each other with bone-shattering force.
Vanya watched with her heart in her throat. Every wound on Kael’s body felt like one on her own. She wanted to protect him the way he had protected her in the forest. The love she felt burned hot and fierce mixing with crushing guilt. She had failed him for fourteen years. She would not fail him now.
Logan circled around the chaos his new blade gleaming. “Pathetic. Even knowing the truth you still bleed like a human.” The usurper lunged at Vanya with sudden speed aiming to end the princess while Kael was distracted.
Vanya spun to meet him. Her claws clashed against his blade sending sparks flying. “You murdered our father. You chained our mother. I will tear your throat out myself!”
Their fight turned brutal and personal. Logan’s superior strength pushed her back but Vanya fought with everything she had. Every slash carried her rage her love for her lost family and her desperate need to prove herself to the brother she had just claimed.
Kael finished the first Guardian by collapsing its entire chest cavity into nothingness. He turned toward Vanya just as Logan backhanded her hard across the face. She flew backward crashing into the wall blood spilling from her split lip.
Something inside Kael snapped.
The violet aura around him surged wildly. The temperature in the corridor plummeted until frost covered the broken walls. “Touch her again and I will erase your entire bloodline from existence.”
His voice carried a new weight. Not just cold power. But raw protective fury. The kind that came from blood finally recognizing blood.
The remaining Guardians sensed the shift and attacked with renewed savagery. Kael moved like a force of nature. He caught one beast’s jaws with both hands and pried them apart until the creature’s skull cracked. The other he lifted off the ground with pure gravitational force before slamming it down so hard the floor collapsed beneath it sending the Guardian tumbling into the level below.
Logan retreated a few steps actual fear flickering across his face for the first time. “This changes nothing boy. Your mother still rots in my dungeons. Your sisters are scattered or dead. The throne is mine.”
Kael’s eyes shifted toward the lower levels. He had heard it too. That faint desperate female voice calling through the stones. Their mother. Queen Marra.
Vanya pushed herself up wiping blood from her mouth. She stumbled to Kael’s side her voice thick with emotion. “She’s alive. I can feel her. We have to reach the dungeons Kael. She needs to see you. She never stopped mourning you.”
The Oracle laughed weakly from where he leaned against a cracked pillar. “Fools. The deeper you go the stronger the Keep’s defenses become. The Royal Guardians were only the beginning.”
More howls echoed from below. Dozens of them. The entire Obsidian Keep seemed to be waking up to reject the scentless intruder.
Kael looked at Vanya. His silver-blue eyes held a storm of feelings he didn’t fully understand yet. Anger at the past. Confusion at this sudden family. And a quiet spark of something warmer. Connection. “Then we go down. Together.”
He grabbed her hand. The touch sent a jolt through both of them. For the first time since leaving the Deadwood Kael felt something besides cold emptiness. Blood. Family. Purpose.
They moved as one toward the grand staircase leading deeper into the Keep. Logan and the Oracle shouted orders behind them but Kael unleashed a wide vacuum wave that collapsed part of the corridor behind them blocking immediate pursuit.
The descent was chaotic. Ancient traps activated. Silver spikes shot from walls. Moonfire wards tried to burn them. Kael dismantled each one with growing mastery while Vanya fought at his side covering his blind spots. Every step brought them closer to the voice calling from the dungeons. Their mother’s voice growing clearer with every level.
“Vanya… my daughter… is that you? Who is with you?”
The voice was weak but filled with desperate hope. It pierced straight through Vanya’s heart. Tears flowed freely down her face now. “Mother! We’re coming! I found him. I found our prince!”
They burst into the lowest dungeon level. The air was thick with silver dust meant to suppress shifter powers. Heavy iron cells lined the walls. In the center cell chained to the floor with glowing silver manacles sat Queen Marra.
She looked frail yet regal. Silver hair matted with grime. Amber eyes that once shone with queenly fire now dimmed by years of suffering. But when she saw Kael those eyes widened in pure shock and overwhelming love.
The half-moon pendant around Kael’s neck began to glow brightly as if responding to her presence. The matching piece around Queen Marra’s neck answered with soft golden light.
Marra’s voice broke. “My son… Kael. The baby they took from me. You’re alive.”
Kael stood frozen at the cell door. His usual cold mask had completely shattered. Emotions warred across his face. The void inside him churned violently as years of loneliness collided with this sudden truth. He reached out and touched the silver bars. They dissolved instantly under his power.
Vanya rushed forward helping her mother to her feet. The three of them stood together for the first time. Mother son and daughter. A broken family beginning to heal in the heart of their enemy’s stronghold.
Marra touched Kael’s cheek with trembling fingers tears streaming down her face. “You have his eyes. But stronger. So much stronger. Forgive us my child. We failed you.”
Kael’s hand covered hers. His voice came out rough with feelings he had never experienced before. “I was never empty. I was waiting.”
But the moment shattered as heavy footsteps thundered down the stairs. Logan appeared at the entrance flanked by the Oracle and over twenty fresh elite guards. His face twisted with murderous rage.
“You will not take her from me!” Logan roared. “I am the King!”
He raised his blade and the remaining Royal Guardians poured into the dungeon chamber surrounding them completely. Their combined presence pressed down like a mountain.
Kael stepped in front of his mother and sister. The violet aura around him exploded into a blazing storm. His voice rang out cold yet burning with new passion.
“Then today the false king dies.”
Yet as the Guardians charged and Logan unleashed his full supreme alpha power Kael felt something dangerous stir deep within his Divine Void Dantian. The power was growing too fast. Too hungry. The void was starting to pull at everything around him including his mother and sister.
A terrifying realization hit him. If he lost control now he might devour the very family he had just found.
