Chapter 5

During Nathan's arraignment, the courthouse hummed with quiet tension. I sat in the back row, watching the man who once dominated a room now standing in shackles and an orange jumpsuit. He looked diminished.

His high-priced lawyer argued for his release, describing Nathan as a respected community figure with no criminal history. The prosecutor pushed back hard, highlighting the flight risk and Nathan's attempt to destroy evidence.

"Bail denied," the judge ruled. "The defendant will remain in custody pending trial."

Nathan's shoulders sagged. For a split second, the mask slipped. Then his lawyer whispered something, and he nodded mechanically. I felt no rush of victory, only a heavy blend of vindication and the sobering knowledge that this was far from over.

After the hearing, Emma found me in the hallway. She was carrying a thick folder with both hands.

"Everything from the storage unit," she said. "Sixty thousand pages of financial records, organized by date and transaction. It's damning."

"Can we flip Sophie?" I asked.

Emma's expression tightened. "Her lawyer reached out this morning. She's terrified, but she's open to a deal. She wants protection."

"Tell her we'll protect her in exchange for her full cooperation," I said. "She's not the real villain here. She was just caught in his web."

Emma studied me. "You're showing her mercy. I didn't expect that."

"I'm not a monster," I replied quietly. "Not yet, anyway."

Sophie agreed to a private meeting at a quiet coffee shop in Brooklyn. When I arrived, she looked like a different woman—her hair was loose, she had dark circles under her eyes, and she was dressed in simple jeans and a sweater instead of her usual polished designer outfits.

"I knew you'd come for me eventually," she said as I sat down. "You were never as broken as you seemed after the accident."

"I was calculating," I admitted. "Not broken."

Sophie stared into her coffee. "I loved him. I really thought he was going to leave you for me."

"Were you happy?" I asked.

She didn't answer. The silence spoke volumes.

"Here's the deal," I continued. "You testify fully against Nathan. You cooperate with the feds. In return, we won't pursue charges against you. You get to keep your freedom and your career. You get to walk away and start over."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then you go down with him. Headlines: Prison time. There's no future for you in this industry."

Sophie's hands trembled around her mug. "I wasted years on him."

"I know," I said gently. "But you still have a choice now."

After a long silence, she looked up, her eyes filled with raw grief. "Okay, I'll testify."

News of Sophie's cooperation spread quickly through the company. Suddenly, the woman who had once been untouchable found herself isolated. Former friends looked away in the break room. Invitations to meetings dried up. The pack had turned on the weak.

I watched it unfold from my new temporary office. The weight of it was heavier than I expected.

Zara appeared in my doorway with two cups of coffee. "You look bothered."

"Shouldn't I be?" I asked. "I just helped destroy her reputation."

"She made her choices," Zara said as she sat down. "Nathan used her. You gave her an exit. That's not cruelty; that's survival. You're not becoming a monster, Victoria. You're just learning how to protect what matters."

I studied the young artist who had become one of my strongest allies. "What do you think about Marcus?"

Zara didn't hesitate. "He's not human. And neither are you. I've seen the way your eyes change. The way you move. The way you smell things no one else can."

"Aren't you scared?" I asked.

Zara smiled. "I trust you. Monster or not, I'd follow you anywhere."

That evening, Marcus waited for me outside my apartment building, half-hidden in the shadows. The moment our eyes met, the pull between us intensified.

"You've been quiet," he said as I approached.

"I've been thinking about that message on my phone. About what's really happening here."

Marcus stepped closer. "It came from one of the old supernatural families. They don't like wolves getting involved in human corporate affairs, especially when it draws attention. If this keeps escalating, it puts me—and everyone tied to me—in danger."

"Is a larger pack involved?" I asked.

"My family," he replied. "I'm connected to them, but it's complicated. They've noticed me protecting you. They're curious why I'd risk exposure for someone they see as a newly awakened gamma."

He brushed his thumb across my cheek, and his eyes shifted to amber. "Because I saw what you could become the first time I met you. Something extraordinary."

He kissed me then—deep, certain, and full of recognition. When we parted, his voice dropped.

The warmth between us faded as his tone turned grave.

"There's more. Nathan's connections run deeper than we thought. They're not just covering up financial crimes. They're part of a network that wants to control supernatural beings, use them, and keep them hidden."

I felt a chill run down my spine. "And now I'm on their radar."

"That's why I need to bring you before my family. Formally. As a wolf. Because what's coming isn't just a corporate war anymore."

He looked out into the darkened street, his jaw tight.

"It's something much older. And far more dangerous."
