Chapter 7 Chapter Seven: Millie

My head hurt like hell, but I was too comfortable on whatever I had been sleeping on to care.

I shifted a little, trying to make myself more comfortable, but the second my hand brushed against something hard, I froze.

Slowly, I moved my hand again, just to make sure that whatever I had touched was actually what I thought it was.

Fuck.

Had I slept with someone last night?

I had no recollection of what happened, and that scared me more than anything. I was almost afraid to open my eyes.

Taking a deep breath, I finally did.

For a second, I stared at the familiar ceiling, trying to figure out where I was. Then it hit me. I was in the same room I shared with Jude.

My heart started pounding. Had I brought someone back to his room last night?

I slowly turned my head toward the person beside me, and my heart dropped straight into my stomach. Because lying beside me, shirtless, was Jude Callahan.

I jolted upright so quickly that I nearly fell off the bed, startling him awake. For a second, he looked just as confused as I was. But unlike me, he seemed to recover quickly, his expression changing into something I couldn’t quite read.

It was almost as though he knew exactly what had happened last night.

“Did we sleep with each other last night?”

I did my best to ignore the pounding in my head. I needed answers.

“You don’t know what happened last night?” he asked.

There was a huge chance I was imagining it, but did Jude look nervous? Because the confidence I was used to seeing in him had disappeared somewhere, and I was suddenly dying to know why.

“No.” I winced as I shook my head. “I don’t remember.”

I heard him curse under his breath, and my stomach tightened.

“What’s the last thing you remember about last night?” he asked, running a hand down his face.

“I was in the room. I felt bored and wanted to do something different, so I put my red dress on and went to the bar.”

I paused, trying to piece together the blurry fragments in my head.

“I found you and your friend there… His name is Niall, right?”

He nodded.

“I sat with you. We kept drinking and talking and…” I frowned, searching my memory for anything else. Nothing came. “That’s it?”

The last part came out more like a question than a statement.

Jude stared at me for a long moment. The look on his face scared me more than not remembering anything at all.

“Okay, I need you to listen to me carefully,” he said, making the anticipation inside of me grow. “What happened last night didn’t happen without your consent.”

“So, we slept together, right?”

“We did.”

I closed my eyes.

“Millie, I promise I didn’t take advantage of you last night. We were tipsy, but not completely drunk,” he tried explaining the situation to me.

“I know you didn’t use me,” I mumbled, rubbing my forehead. “I’m really light-headed, and I get drunk easily, but not exactly too drunk. Like I’d be aware of my surroundings and everything, but the next day I’d struggle to remember what happened.”

“Well… fuck.”

If it was possible, my heart started beating faster because I could tell that we had done something else. What I couldn’t get was what could be worse than sleeping together?

I looked down at my body and found myself dressed in my tank top and underwear. At least I wasn’t completely naked.

“What else have we done, Jude?”

Sooner or later, I was bound to find out. There was no point in stalling.

I watched him as he got out of bed, and I tried to ignore how toned his body was. Did this man have an ounce of fat in his body?

He paced back and forth, which only added to my anxiety.

I brought my left hand to my forehead to massage it but stopped midway because there was a ring on my ring finger I didn’t recognize.

When did I get this ring? Why was I wearing it on my ring finger when I was single?

Unless…

No! This could not be happening.

I got out of bed, quickly looking for my shorts. Even if we slept together last night, I didn’t feel comfortable standing in front of him in my undergarments.

“Jude,” I said, putting my shorts on. “Did we by any chance get married last night?”

Maybe I was just losing my mind, and it connected the dots in the stupidest way.

“We did,” he said, craning his neck.

“What?!” I exclaimed. “How could you let this happen?!”

“I didn’t force you to marry me!” He threw his hands in the air.

“Why would I even want to marry you?” I snapped. My breath quickened as I tried to wrap my mind around what happened.

“To get back at your ex.”

I frowned at him.

What?

No, I wasn’t that shallow.

He told me about what I said last night about wanting to get back at Conrad for breaking my heart. Apparently, I had told him that Conrad would hate it if I found someone who was better than him, and when Niall suggested the idea of Jude and me getting married, I was on board.

“Why would you even agree to this?”

Of all the girls in the world, he chose to marry me on a whim. That was the most absurd thing ever.

“I wanted to help you out.” He shrugged. “And… marriage might help my image according to Niall.”

I tilted my head in confusion.

“People fear me because I’m not exactly the most approachable person. He told me marriage might fix this.”

Why was he being so casual about the whole thing?

“Thank you so much for trying to help me out, but this is insane.”

I never thought I would end up in an accidental marriage. What the hell was that situation I had found myself in?

“We need to get this marriage annulled, Jude,” I announced. “Nobody has to know about this.”

He stayed silent, staring at me for a few seconds before eventually nodding.

“I’ll take a shower, then we can leave afterwards.”

“Alright.”

I went to the closet to get some clean clothes out. This was a disaster no one needed to know about, but at least annulment existed.

“Uhhh… Millie.” I looked up when I heard Jude’s voice. “There’s another issue.”

As I looked at his phone screen, I realized that we were screwed.
