Chapter 6 Find This Hacker
The two voices were pretty loud, and with a seminar about to kick off, the hallway was buzzing with people.
Robert returned with the report just in time to catch the scene.
"Dr. Garcia, we need to have a serious talk. There might be some misunderstanding here," Terry said, his jaw clenched and his eyes hard to read.
Isabella saw he wasn't ready to let it go, so she stopped walking.
"Mr. Carter, I'm just doing my job. Anything else isn't my concern."
Isabella didn't want to drag this out with Terry.
There were too many people around, and someone might notice something.
"We're not done talking. You can't just walk away!"
He blocked her path, and Isabella realized he was set on making things tough for her today.
Meanwhile, Oliver was sitting on a kiddie chair in the break room, his tiny hands gripping the window frame, his big eyes staring unblinkingly at the scene outside.
Though he couldn't hear through the glass, he saw Terry's angry face and Isabella's weary and indifferent look.
Oliver clenched his tiny fists.
He remembered yesterday at the hospital's back door, Terry had grabbed Isabella's wrist! She looked so hurt then, too!
'Bad man! Always bullying Mommy!' He thought.
Isabella was blocked by two people, and her patience was completely gone. "Mr. Carter, I've said all I need to say. If you have any further issues with me, take it up with the hospital administration. Stop wasting my time."
Her expression was colder than ever, startling Terry.
"Terry, we have other matters to attend to," Robert said, stepping forward with a serious look and a low voice.
Robert had been standing in the corner, unnoticed by Terry and the others.
Elora saw Robert, and the tension in the air eased significantly.
Since she first met him, she had someone look into Robert's background. The findings had shocked her.
He had a powerful background, and the deeper they dug, the less they found.
When Terry saw Robert, his gaze shifted away from Isabella for a moment.
"When did you come back to the States?" He asked, stepping closer and eyeing Robert's badge. "Why are you working as an intern instead of taking over the family business?"
"Terry, it's a long story. I didn't get a chance to catch up with you since I returned. How about dinner tonight, my treat?"
They seemed to know each other well, like old friends who hadn't seen each other in years.
Handling someone as troublesome as Terry, Robert did it with ease.
Seeing an old friend, Terry had no choice but to drop the argument, giving Isabella the chance to leave.
It wasn't because she was scared; her kids had been hungry for a while, and she needed to take them to eat.
Isabella returned to the break room to get her kids.
When they saw Isabella, they rushed over and hugged her tightly.
"Amelia, Oliver." Isabella gathered herself, bent down to pick up her kids, her voice gentle and soothing. "I'm taking you to eat now."
"Mommy, carry us." The kids stretched out their little arms, and Isabella chuckled softly, lovingly picking them up.
Oliver buried his face in Isabella's neck, and as they walked out the door, he shot a fierce glare at Terry with his big eyes.
Their eyes met, and Terry felt inexplicably irritated by the child's accusatory stare.
'Why does this little guy seem to have a grudge against me?' He thought to himself.
After dinner, they returned to their apartment.
Isabella put Amelia to sleep, soothed the unusually quiet Oliver, and then went to her study to continue working.
Thinking about what happened at the hospital, she felt a wave of exhaustion.
Oliver watched the closed study door, then silently crawled to his little desk and opened his laptop.
It looked like a children's notebook, but a month ago, he had Henry modify it. Entering a code would switch it to another mode.
His small hands clumsily yet precisely tapped the virtual keyboard.
He remembered Terry's company name.
Avery Technology Corporation.
"Bad guy! Bullying Mommy!" Oliver muttered as he operated the laptop, his little face full of indignation.
Using the knowledge he had learned, he began trying to infiltrate the company's website.
Avery Technology Corporation spent three hundred million dollars annually on its firewall, making it hard to breach, but Oliver was patient, probing bit by bit.
Success!
Oliver didn't immediately touch the core data. He just wanted to give them a simple warning!
If it happened again, he wouldn't be so polite!
He wanted them to know Terry was a bully.
The next morning at Avery Technology Corporation.
The tech department was in chaos.
"Mr. Carter, our internal system and website have been hacked!" The head of the tech department reported, sweating profusely.
Terry's expression darkened, and he quickly opened his computer.
The usually clean company intranet homepage now had a childish drawing of a brown bear, baring its teeth prominently.
Below the drawing was a string of text.
[Bad guy! Bullying bad guy!]
At the end of the text was an angry emoji.
The tech department staff exchanged looks, trying not to laugh.
Whoever went through all this trouble to infiltrate the company was clearly targeting Terry.
But the attack method was so childish!
Yet, they couldn't immediately fix it.
The hacker had exploited a vulnerability they hadn't anticipated.
Terry stared at the screen, his jaw clenched, his pupils contracting sharply.
"Find out who did this!"
The tech department head, under immense pressure, sweat beading on his forehead, said, "Mr. Carter, we can't trace it yet. The hacker is very skilled. The final IP address we tracked was in a public area overseas, clearly rerouted multiple times."
Terry's fingers drummed on the desk.
A hacker who could do this to their website and leave their tech team helpless was no amateur.
This uncontrollable factor made him extremely uncomfortable.
But rather than making the hacker pay, it might be better to turn an enemy into a friend, to use such talent for his own benefit.
"Leave."
Terry waved his hand, then, after a moment of thought, called the PR department.
