Chapter 4 The New Intern

Isabella wrapped up her last surgery of the day, glancing at the clock. It was already late.

She checked her phone. Oliver had texted, letting her know he had ordered takeout for himself and Amelia, so she didn't need to worry.

The kids had grown so independent over the years.

Both were incredibly smart: Oliver, her eldest, had mastered hacking at three and once breached the national defense firewall, resulting in the police showing up at their door; Amelia was a prodigy too, starting to paint at a young age, with her anonymous artworks fetching millions at auctions.

Isabella felt a headache coming on.

Were these kids really hers? How could they be so extraordinary? Maybe they carried memories from a past life.

Thinking about this, Isabella packed up her bag, ready to leave the hospital.

At that moment, Terry was smoking at the entrance, his face filled with unresolved frustration.

The glass door at the side entrance opened, and a familiar figure walked in.

It was Isabella.

Her white coat was casually open, revealing a finely tailored silk shirt and black pants underneath. She didn't notice him.

Watching her back, Terry felt a sudden jolt of familiarity. His heart seemed to skip a beat.

Almost instinctively, he put out his cigarette and called out, "Dr. Garcia."

Isabella turned at the sound, her eyes briefly showing a hint of friendliness before reverting to cold indifference. "Mr. Carter, do you need something?"

Terry took a few steps forward, closing the distance. He could clearly smell the scent of lilies on her.

"About my grandfather," He tried to find a topic, his gaze inadvertently falling on her long eyelashes.

"You don't need to waste your breath, Mr. Carter. If there's nothing else, I'll be leaving." Isabella interrupted him, her tone flat.

The air grew tense.

As Isabella prepared to leave, Terry's agitation grew stronger, looking into her captivating eyes.

"Have we met somewhere before?" He couldn't help but ask, his voice deep.

Isabella chuckled, "Mr. Carter, that's such a cliché pickup line." She turned to leave. "Excuse me."

As she turned, Terry instinctively grabbed her slender wrist.

The moment their skin touched, both of them froze.

"Let go! Show some respect!" Isabella's voice was laced with anger, her patience completely drained.

"Bad man! Don't touch my mommy!"

A sweet, childlike voice suddenly rang out.

Oliver's face was flushed, his little legs moving quickly as he ran over.

He looked like an angry little lion, standing protectively in front of Isabella.

Terry instinctively let go of her wrist, staring in shock at the little boy who had appeared out of nowhere.

"Mommy, this bad man is bullying you!" Oliver glared at Terry, his big eyes full of reproach. "Uncle Henry said anyone who grabs a girl's hand like that is a bad guy!"

Terry looked at the boy's delicate face, feeling an inexplicable bitterness.

Being scolded by a child should have made him angry, but he couldn't muster any anger at all.

"Stay away from my mommy!" Oliver clung tightly to Isabella's leg.

At the same time, Amelia appeared from somewhere and hugged Isabella's other leg.

"We have to protect mommy!" Their soft voices melted Isabella's heart.

She really had two children?

Why did these two kids feel so familiar to him?

Isabella picked up her children, giving Terry a cold look before she left with her children.

Terry stood there, bewildered.

What kind of person was he? Why did this woman dislike him so much?

The next morning, a crowd had gathered outside the cardiothoracic surgery office.

Isabella stepped out of the director's office and saw Gregory leading a young man toward her.

As they got closer, she saw the young man's face.

He was in his twenties, wearing a white coat, with a few stray hairs lazily hanging over his forehead. His face was striking, like a beautiful boy from a painting, almost perfect.

Seeing Isabella, Gregory introduced, "Dr. Garcia, this is Robert Lopez, our new attending physician in the cardiothoracic department. Dr. Lopez just returned to the country and is still in training. You could mentor him."

Before Gregory could finish, Robert spoke eagerly.

"Abigail! Long time no see!" Robert's smile was innocent, and he bowed slightly, his voice gentle.

Isabella looked puzzled. "Robert? What are you doing here?"

"My family called me back. My cousin told me you were back in the country and working here, so I took the offer."

Isabella frowned slightly.

His cousin was Charles.

After that day, Isabella had looked into it.

Charles's family business in pharmaceuticals was heavily entangled with Terry's, which explained why Charles had asked her to operate on Terry's grandfather.

Gregory was surprised, 'They knew each other?'

Robert was a rising star in cardiothoracic surgery abroad.

Yesterday, Abigail had been quite uncooperative, and Elora had complained at home for a long time. Gregory had hoped that bringing Robert in would curb Abigail's defiance.

But they were this close?

Gregory felt a bit annoyed. He needed to create competition between them.

"Since you two know each other, you should learn from each other. Our hospital's funds are limited, and we can only keep one specialist in the cardiothoracic department."

Robert stepped forward. "Mr. Harris, I've already told you, I came here for Abigail. Wherever Abigail goes, I go. If you didn't understand that, I can say it again."

Robert's tone was gentle, but his eyes were resolute.

He then wrapped an arm around Isabella's shoulders, his voice almost playful. "Abigail, I have several projects I need to discuss with you. The professor won't explain them to me without you in the lab."

Isabella was startled by the sudden closeness, but Robert's sincerity was unmistakable.

"Let's go discuss in the lab," Robert said, smiling.

Isabella nodded politely to Gregory, and the two of them turned to leave.

At that moment, a commotion erupted in the hallway.

Elora, wearing high heels and a white coat, was surrounded by executives and reporters, strutting through the hospital like she was on a runway.

"Thank you very much to the hospital for giving me this opportunity to learn and experience firsthand." She smiled at the camera, her voice gentle. "As a public figure, I've always wanted to contribute to society. This time, to understand the challenges faced by healthcare workers for my new role, I'll be studying here for a month."

As she finished speaking, dozens of flashbulbs went off, capturing her humble expression.

In less than ten minutes, headlines like "Elora Dedicates Herself to Hospital, Studies for Role" would be all over the entertainment sections.

Her gaze fell on the nameplate "Abigail Garcia," and she paused.
