I walked into Jake's office his back to me.
"You’ve been avoiding me,” I said, the words trembling more than I wanted.
Jake didn’t turn. His voice came low, tight. “Because I’m trying to protect you.”
“From what? You?” I laughed bitterly. “Too late.”
He turned, and I forgot how to breathe.
His eyes weren’t soft. They were storm-dark. Furious. And terrified.
“I would burn down this entire territory to protect what’s mine,” he growled, stepping in so close I could feel the heat pouring off his skin. “But if I touch you now, Prisca, I won’t be able to stop.”
His hand brushed my stomach, tentative. Reverent.
“My babies,” he whispered, the first time I’d heard him claim them. Claim me.
I reached up, touched his face. “Then don’t stop.”
