Chapter 7 Midnight Exchange

Leo stepped out of the armored SUV into the dimly lit underground parking garage, tension coiling tight in his shoulders.

“Stay sharp,” he told the four security men flanking him. “Anything feels wrong, we leave immediately.”

The neutral location was a quiet mid-level office building in the financial district, chosen for its multiple exits and heavy surveillance. Elena had arranged everything. She waited near the private elevator, dressed in dark, practical clothes, her usual composure sharpened by caution.

“Sophia arrived five minutes ago,” Elena said quietly. “She came alone, as agreed. Our team swept the entire floor. No obvious threats, but we’re monitoring every signal.”

Leo nodded, jaw set. The memory of Victor’s mocking laughter at the dinner table still pushed him forward, but tonight’s meeting carried heavier risks. Death threats against Meridian workers, confirmed betrayal by Damien, and now whispers of an old scandal that could unravel his grandfather’s empire. Every step felt like walking deeper into poisoned territory.

They rode the elevator in silence. When the doors opened on the twenty-second floor, Sophia stood alone in the center of the empty conference room, hands clasped tightly. She looked smaller than Leo remembered, eyes wide with genuine fear.

“Leo,” she breathed, stepping forward. “Thank you for coming. I wasn’t sure you would.”

Leo stopped several feet away, security positioned at the doors. “You said you had proof about my grandfather’s scandal. Talk fast. Victor’s people are already threatening lives on my sites.”

Sophia glanced nervously at Elena, then back to Leo. “My father has documents. Old ones. From fifteen years ago. Your grandfather used forged environmental reports to fast-track three major Kane buildings. If those papers go public, regulators will freeze every Kane project, including Meridian Tower. It could take years to clear.”

Leo felt the twist hit hard. His grandfather had played a ruthless long game, but he had left landmines behind. “Why would Victor sit on this for years?”

“Because he was waiting for the right moment to destroy you,” Sophia said, voice trembling. “He hates that you inherited everything. And he’s planning something worse than legal attacks. He’s meeting people tonight who handle dirty work. Real accidents. I overheard him say Meridian Tower needs to ‘have problems that can’t be fixed with money.’”

Elena’s eyes narrowed. “And you suddenly decided to betray your father? After staying silent while he humiliated Leo in front of the entire family?”

Sophia’s eyes filled with tears. “I was scared that night. Scared of losing everything. But I never wanted Leo hurt like this. I still care about him. These people my father is talking to… they don’t stop at sabotage. Someone could die.”

Leo studied her face, searching for lies. Part of him remembered the warmth they once shared. The rest remembered her silence when Victor had thrown him out like garbage. “Where are the documents?”

“I have copies,” Sophia said, pulling a USB drive from her pocket. “Everything Victor has on the old scandal. Take it. Use it to strike first. But please… be careful. My father is losing control. He’s desperate.”

Leo took the drive but didn’t soften. “If this is a trap, Sophia, I will destroy what’s left of your family without hesitation.”

She stepped closer, voice dropping. “It’s not a trap. I’m trying to stop this before it goes too far. Meet me again if you need more. Just… don’t let him win.”

The meeting ended abruptly when Marcus called through the secure line. “Sir, we have movement. Damien was spotted meeting one of Victor’s known associates twenty minutes ago. They’re planning something for tonight.”

Leo ended the conversation with Sophia and turned to leave. “We’re done here. Stay away from your father’s plans if you want to stay safe.”

As they rode the elevator down, Elena spoke quietly. “She seemed genuinely scared. But the timing is convenient. She gives you the scandal right when Victor is escalating.”

Leo slipped the USB into his pocket. “We verify everything. Have the legal team analyze the files tonight. If they’re real, we use them to counter-attack before Victor can release them.”

They reached the garage and climbed back into the convoy. The moment the doors closed, Leo’s phone rang. Marcus.

“Sir, Meridian Tower site just reported an explosion in one of the storage containers. No casualties yet, but it was meant to scare. Security caught one man fleeing. He’s linked to Damien.”

Leo’s blood boiled. “Bring Damien in immediately. I want him questioned tonight. And double the guard at every Kane site. No more warnings.”

Elena watched him carefully. “This is getting darker faster than expected. Victor is moving from corporate warfare to real violence. And Sophia’s information could be the key to hitting him first.”

Leo leaned back, mind racing through every angle. The emotional stakes pulled at him from multiple directions. The woman he once loved offering help while her father tried to destroy him. An internal traitor feeding information. His grandfather’s buried sins threatening to surface at the worst moment.

“Set up the interrogation of Damien,” Leo ordered. “I want answers before dawn. And start preparing a preemptive strike using the scandal files. If they’re real, we leak just enough to make Victor defensive.”

The convoy sped through the city streets. Leo stared out at the passing lights, the towers he now controlled standing tall against the night sky. He had survived humiliation and sudden power. Now he would survive betrayal and violence.

Back at headquarters, the war room was already buzzing when they arrived. Damien sat restrained in a side room, looking pale and defiant.

Leo walked in without preamble. “You met with Victor’s people tonight. You helped plan the explosion at Meridian. Talk.”

Damien sneered. “You’re paranoid, Kane. I was gathering intelligence. You’re destroying the company with your revenge crusade.”

Leo leaned down, voice low and dangerous. “Workers’ lives are being threatened because of leaks from your division. You either tell me everything you shared with Victor, or I make sure you lose more than your job.”

Damien’s confidence cracked slightly, but he stayed silent.

Marcus pulled Leo aside. “The USB files are being analyzed. Preliminary check shows they appear authentic. Your grandfather did cut corners on early projects. Victor has enough to cause serious damage if released.”

Leo exhaled slowly. Another twist in the long game his grandfather had played. “Prepare a controlled leak. Something that puts pressure back on Victor without fully exposing us. Make it look like it came from inside Hale Group.”

Elena joined them, her steady presence grounding the chaos. “You handled Sophia well. But trust her at your own risk. She might be playing both sides.”

Leo nodded. “I know. But right now, we use every weapon we have. Terminate Damien officially. Freeze all his assets. Make sure the entire company sees what happens to traitors.”
