Chapter 6 Poisoned Veins
Leo burst through the war room doors at first light, the latest security feed still playing on his tablet.
“Three workers quit Meridian Tower this morning,” he said, voice hard. “They received death threats overnight, complete with photos of their families. This is no longer sabotage. It’s terror.”
Marcus Reed looked up, exhaustion etched on his face. “The threats trace back to the same shell company. The payment originated from a Kane Group account in Damien’s division. We have the transaction log, but it’s been carefully routed.”
Leo slammed the tablet down. The humiliation from Victor’s dinner table felt like fuel now, burning hotter with every new betrayal. He had risen from delivery driver to master of billions, yet knives kept appearing from every shadow.
“Bring Damien in,” Leo ordered. “Now. And lock down all access to Meridian files. Only the core team sees anything.”
Elena Voss stood near the digital map, marking red flags on Hale-linked properties. Her calm presence cut through the rising tension like a steady blade. “Victor is escalating because the Eastside Plaza tenants are defecting. Two more signed with us last night. He’s losing control and lashing out.”
Damien Cross entered flanked by two security officers, his usual arrogance replaced by defensive anger. “This is getting ridiculous, Kane. Dragging me in like a criminal every time something goes wrong.”
Leo didn’t sit. He stepped directly in front of Damien, eyes locked. “The threats to my workers came through your division’s accounts. Explain that before I remove you permanently.”
Damien’s face paled slightly, but he recovered fast. “I have dozens of people under me. Any one of them could have been compromised. You’re so obsessed with revenge against the Hales that you’re seeing ghosts everywhere.”
Elena spoke calmly from the side. “The routing was too precise for a random employee. Someone with high access did this.”
Leo felt the twist tightening. Damien had opposed every aggressive move from day one. Now workers’ lives were being threatened, and the trail led straight to his door.
“Suspend him,” Leo told Marcus. “Full investigation. Freeze his access and accounts. If he’s working with Victor, I want ironclad proof by tomorrow.”
Damien laughed bitterly as security moved in. “You’re making a mistake. The board won’t stand for this paranoia. Victor is right about you. You’re still just a delivery boy playing king.”
Leo stepped closer, voice low and ice-cold. “That delivery boy now owns the buildings your family leases. Keep talking and I’ll make sure you have nowhere left to work in this city.”
Damien was escorted out. The room exhaled, but the tension remained thick as blood.
Leo turned back to the team. “We don’t slow down because of internal poison. Call the loans on Hale’s logistics partner today. I want their Eastside Plaza tenants screaming for relief by noon. And accelerate the buyout offers. Make them public.”
Clara nodded and rushed to coordinate. Reports started flowing in rapidly. Eastside Plaza was cracking under the pressure. One major tenant had already agreed to switch sides and issue a public statement praising Kane Group’s reliability.
Then Sophia’s secure line buzzed again.
Leo answered, keeping the speaker off. “What now?”
“Leo, please listen,” Sophia whispered urgently. “My father met with someone dangerous last night. People who don’t just sabotage sites. They make problems disappear. He mentioned your grandfather’s old scandal. Something about forged permits on the original Kane buildings years ago. If he releases it, it could trigger investigations that freeze your entire empire.”
Leo’s grip tightened. Another layer of his grandfather’s secrets unfolding. The old man had timed the inheritance perfectly, but he had left landmines behind.
“Why are you really telling me this?” Leo asked.
There was a pause. “Because I saw what they did to you at dinner. I was weak. But I never wanted you dead. Meet me tonight. Just us. I have proof about the scandal.”
Leo ended the call without promising anything. He turned to Elena, who had been listening quietly.
“She claims Victor is moving beyond corporate war into something darker,” he said. “And there’s an old scandal about my grandfather that could cripple us.”
Elena’s eyes sharpened. “It could be a trap to lure you out. Or she might be trying to switch sides before her father falls completely. Either way, we need to verify the information first.”
Leo nodded. “Set up a neutral location with heavy security if I decide to go. But right now, we focus on Eastside Plaza. I want the first public defection announced before lunch.”
The morning turned into a blur of calculated strikes. Leo approved aggressive buyout packages and new security protocols for Meridian Tower. Each decision pushed the Kane Group deeper into enemy territory while strengthening its own position.
By midday, the first major victory landed. One of Eastside Plaza’s anchor tenants held a press conference announcing their switch to Kane Group, citing “unreliable partnerships” with the Hales. The stock impact on Hale Group was immediate and visible.
Leo stood at the head of the table watching the numbers shift. “Good. Let Victor feel the ground cracking beneath him.”
Marcus brought fresh intelligence. “Damien made three calls after his suspension. Two to known Hale associates. We have recordings. He’s definitely feeding information.”
Leo’s jaw set. “Prepare his termination papers. Full asset freeze. Make an example of him. Anyone who betrays this company gets destroyed.”
Elena approached during a brief lull. “You’re winning the battles, Leo. But the internal threats are growing. And Sophia’s offer… it could be genuine or the perfect setup.”
Leo met her gaze. In the chaos of corporate bloodshed and hidden scandals, Elena remained the one constant who had never looked down on him. Her quiet rebellion had become more valuable than any asset.
“I know the risks,” he said. “But I won’t hide from them. Set up the meeting for tonight, neutral ground, heavy security. I’ll hear what she has to say. Then decide if she’s part of the solution or another poison.”
As afternoon wore on, new reports confirmed rising panic inside Hale Group. Victor had canceled public appearances and was calling emergency meetings. The pressure was working.
Yet Leo felt the weight of multiple fronts. Victor’s escalating threats. Damien’s confirmed betrayal. Sophia’s dangerous information. His grandfather’s buried scandals that could explode at any moment.
He stood alone for a moment by the large window as the sun began to dip. The city he now controlled stretched below, but every tower seemed to hide new enemies.
Elena joined him quietly. “You don’t have to carry this alone. Whatever Sophia says tonight, I’ll be watching from the security team.”
Leo turned to her, allowing a rare moment of honesty. “When they laughed at me at that dinner, I thought the worst pain was losing Sophia. Now I realize the real pain was believing I needed their approval. You saw me before any of this power. That means something.”
She offered a small, steady smile. “Then use that. Don’t let their poison change the core of who you are becoming.”
Leo nodded and returned to the table. “Final orders for today. Terminate Damien officially. Announce the Eastside defection widely. And prepare for tonight’s meeting. If Sophia has real proof about the grandfather scandal, we use it to strike first.”
