Chapter 3 First Strike

Leo slammed the conference room door behind him as the first rays of morning sun pierced the skyline

“Status on Meridian Tower permits,” he demanded, voice cutting through the exhausted team gathered around the long table.

Marcus Reed looked up from his tablet, face drawn. “Victor Hale moved faster than expected. The planning commission just rejected the acceleration request. They cited sudden environmental concerns that appeared overnight. Three commissioners flipped at the last minute.”

Leo’s eyes narrowed. The humiliation from the dinner table still burned fresh in his chest, now mixed with the sting of his grandfather’s cold calculation. He paced once, mind racing.

“Victor called in favors,” Elena said from her seat beside him. Her tone stayed calm, but her fingers gripped the edge of the table tighter than usual. “He’s telling everyone the new Kane heir is an inexperienced delivery boy playing with fire.”

The words landed hard. Several executives shifted uncomfortably, the same doubt Leo had seen in their eyes the night before.

Leo stopped pacing and planted both hands on the table. “Then we hit back before they finish their coffee. Marcus, pull everything we have on those three commissioners. Hidden debts, affairs, offshore accounts, family secrets. Whatever gives us leverage.”

A younger legal advisor hesitated. “Sir, that kind of pressure… it crosses lines.”

Leo’s gaze snapped to him. “They crossed the line when they laughed me out of that house like garbage. Get it done. I want the permits approved by noon.”

Damien Cross leaned back in his chair, cufflinks flashing. “With respect, Mr. Kane, aggressive moves this early could spook investors. Victor has deep connections. Perhaps we negotiate first.”

Leo turned cold eyes on him. “Negotiate? The same way they negotiated when they called me trash in front of Sophia? No. We don’t negotiate. We dictate.”

He straightened and addressed the entire room. “My grandfather waited until the Hales showed their true colors before handing me this empire. That means he expected me to use it. Meridian Tower moves forward today. Double the security on the site. And start preparing termination notices for every Hale-linked contract we can exit cleanly.”

The team sprang into action. Phones rang. Keyboards clattered. Elena slid a fresh folder toward Leo.

“I made calls on the way here,” she said quietly. “One commissioner, Richard Lang, has serious gambling debts through his daughter and a second family he’s hiding. That’s your strongest pressure point.”

Leo nodded, appreciating her steady support amid the storm. “Use it. Quietly but firmly. Make sure he understands his entire life collapses if the permit stays blocked.”

As the morning raced forward, Leo moved between meetings with razor focus. He approved new legal teams, signed aggressive negotiation papers, and reviewed his grandfather’s sealed Hale Contingency file. The old man had documented every dirty deal Victor had made over the years. The depth of it sent a chill down Leo’s spine.

By eleven o’clock, pressure had been applied. Richard Lang received the call. By eleven forty-five, the commission reversed its decision. Meridian Tower permits were approved with full expedited status.

Leo stood at the head of the table as confirmation came through. A small victory, but the first real one.

Then the doors burst open.

Victor Hale stormed in, flanked by two private security men who had no business being in the building. His face was flushed with fury, expensive suit straining at the shoulders.

“You little bastard,” Victor snarled, pointing directly at Leo. “You think inheriting money suddenly makes you somebody? Threatening commissioners? You’re still the same worthless delivery boy who smelled like oil at my dinner table.”

The entire room went dead silent. Executives exchanged nervous glances. Damien watched with keen interest, saying nothing.

Leo didn’t flinch. He stepped around the table, voice low and controlled. “Mr. Hale. You’re trespassing in my building. But since you’re here, let’s be clear. Your interference with Meridian Tower ends now.”

Victor laughed, the same cruel sound from the dinner. “Interference? I protected this city from an amateur who couldn’t even afford a decent suit. Sophia dodged a bullet with you. She sees it now.”

The mention of Sophia sent a sharp twist through Leo’s chest, but he kept his face stone. “Sophia made her choice when she stayed silent while you humiliated me. As for me being an amateur? I just forced your commission puppets to reverse course. How does that feel?”

Victor’s eyes blazed. “Enjoy your little win, Kane. It won’t last. I’ll bury you and this entire company before you learn how to tie a proper tie.”

Leo stepped closer, voice dropping so only Victor and those nearest could hear. “You already tried to bury me when I had nothing. Failed. Now I have everything. And I’m coming for every building, every contract, and every scrap of influence you own.”

Security finally moved in and escorted Victor toward the exit. He shrugged them off but backed away, spitting one last threat.

“This is war, boy. You’ll regret the day you crossed me.”

The doors slammed behind him. The room exhaled.

Damien spoke first, voice smooth. “Bold move, Mr. Kane. But provoking Victor openly might have consequences.”

Leo turned to him. “Consequences are coming either way. I’d rather they come on my terms.”

He addressed the team again. “Double down on the Riverside Plaza buyout. Freeze every Hale-linked supplier we control. And Marcus, I want a full valuation on the Hale Group by end of day. Find their weakest assets.”

As the team dispersed to execute, Elena pulled Leo aside near the window.

“You stayed sharp,” she said. “But Victor won’t stop at words. He’ll come harder next time.”

Leo stared out at the city. “Let him. Every move he makes reveals more weaknesses. My grandfather knew exactly who they were. He waited until they destroyed any loyalty I had left.”

Elena studied him. “And Sophia? She’s been calling mutual contacts, sounding desperate.”

Leo’s jaw tightened. “She had her chance to speak at that table. Now the only voice that matters is mine.”

A new alert pinged on Marcus’s tablet. He read it and looked up sharply. “Sir, anonymous threats just came in against Meridian Tower workers. Tools sabotaged. One foreman was warned to quit or face worse.”

Leo’s hands clenched. “Victor’s first real strike. Trace it. And triple security. No one touches that site.”

He turned back to the table, issuing orders with machine-like precision. “Prepare the next phase. We don’t just defend Meridian. We start taking Hale properties. Start with their logistics partner. Buy their debt and call it in tomorrow morning.”

The emotional stakes pressed heavy on Leo. He had never wanted revenge. He had only wanted to be enough for the woman he loved. Now that love felt like chains he was burning away, replaced by cold power and the growing shadow of his grandfather’s manipulations.

Elena remained close, her quiet rebellion a steady light in the growing darkness. “You’re not the man they laughed at anymore.”

Leo met her eyes. “No. I’m the man they’re about to fear.”

As afternoon wore on, reports confirmed visible strain on Hale operations. Leo signed documents that would squeeze their supply chains. Each signature felt like another door slamming, but this time in their faces.

Damien lingered after the main meeting, offering a final comment. “Be careful, Mr. Kane. Power like this can change a man.”

Leo gave him a hard look. “It already has. The question is whether you can keep up.”

Alone for a brief moment near the window, Leo allowed himself one deep breath. The city stretched below him, full of buildings now under his control. The Hales had looked down on him, called him worthless, and thrown him out.

Now the game had flipped.

But Leo sensed the first dangerous twist already forming. Damien’s eyes held too much ambition. Victor’s rage ran too deep. And somewhere in the background, Sophia’s desperate messages suggested layers he had not yet uncovered.

He pushed the thoughts aside.

“Next target,” Leo said as the team returned. “Eastside Plaza. Let’s make them bleed.”
