Chapter 10 Lines of fire

Leo’s fist hit the desk as the police captain’s voice came through the speakerphone.

“Mr. Kane, the footage is compelling, but Victor Hale’s lawyers are already claiming it’s fabricated. We need more concrete evidence before we can issue warrants.”

Leo leaned forward, voice razor sharp. “My workers received death threats. An explosion already happened on my site. We have Victor on recording hiring men to cause ‘accidents.’ How much more concrete do you need?”

The captain sighed. “We’re moving as fast as we can. But Hale still has powerful friends. This could take days.”

Leo ended the call and turned to the war room team, eyes burning. “Days? Victor won’t wait days. Marcus, triple private security again. Arm every team leader at Meridian Tower. If the police drag their feet, we protect our own.”

Elena stood beside the digital map, marking new red zones. “Victor went silent after your call last night. No public appearances. But his remaining loyalists are moving money fast. He’s preparing something big.”

Leo paced once, then stopped. Eastside Plaza was now firmly under Kane control, yet the victory tasted bitter with fresh threats looming. The grandfather’s scandal files still hung like a sword over the entire empire. Sophia’s information had helped, but trust remained thin as glass.

“Sophia sent another file at dawn,” Elena said quietly, sliding a tablet toward him. “Bank transfers linking Victor to the same operatives from the warehouse. It’s strong, but it also shows she had access to these records for weeks. She could have warned you earlier.”

Leo scanned the documents. The proof was solid. “She’s either genuinely turning or playing a long game to save her family’s remnants. Either way, we use it.”

He addressed the full team. “Release this new evidence through our channels. Make sure it reaches the same regulators looking into my grandfather’s old permits. Let them see Victor is the real threat while they waste time on fifteen-year-old paperwork.”

The room moved with renewed urgency. Leo signed off on increased security budgets and new acquisition targets. Every move pushed the Kane Group further into Hale territory.

His phone rang. Victor.

Leo answered on speaker. “Calling to surrender?”

Victor’s voice came through like gravel. “You think your little recordings scare me, boy? I built this city while you were delivering noodles. Release your dogs or I burn Meridian Tower to the ground tonight. And I still have enough on your grandfather to send this company into receivership.”

Leo smiled coldly. “You’re bleeding cash, Victor. Eastside Plaza is mine. Your tenants are fleeing. Your logistics network is frozen. Keep threatening me and I’ll take the rest of your empire before the week ends.”

Victor laughed, harsh and unhinged. “You still don’t understand. This was never just about business. You came into my house, eyes on my daughter, thinking you were worthy. I’ll destroy you for that insult alone.”

The call ended abruptly.

Elena met Leo’s gaze. “He’s cornered. Cornered men are the most dangerous.”

Leo nodded. “Then we don’t give him room to breathe. Marcus, prepare the next wave. Target Hale’s flagship commercial tower. Start the buyout process quietly. I want options on the table by tonight.”

As the morning stretched into strategy sessions, a new complication arrived.

One of the younger analysts rushed in. “Sir, we have movement on the scandal investigation. The regulators want a formal meeting with you this afternoon. They’re also requesting access to all Kane archives from the old period.”

Leo’s jaw tightened. The grandfather’s sins refused to stay buried. “Set the meeting. We go prepared. Admit the old irregularities were fixed years ago and pivot hard to Victor’s current crimes.”

During a short break, Elena pulled him aside near the window. The city sprawled below them, towers gleaming under morning light.

“You’re carrying too much at once,” she said softly. “The external war, internal cleanup, the old scandal, and Sophia dangling information like bait. You don’t have to do everything alone.”

Leo looked at her. In the chaos of power and betrayal, Elena remained the one person who had seen him at his lowest and never looked down. “I know. But slowing down gives Victor time to strike. Workers’ lives are on the line now.”

She touched his arm lightly. “Then let me help carry it. I’ve reviewed the new files Sophia sent. There’s something off. One transfer links back to an account Sophia herself controlled briefly last year. She might not be as innocent as she claims.”

Leo absorbed the twist. Another layer. The woman he once loved might have been deeper in her father’s schemes than she admitted. “We keep her at arm’s length. Use what she gives, but verify everything twice.”

The afternoon meeting with regulators was tense. Leo sat across from three stern officials in a neutral conference room, Marcus and Elena flanking him.

“The old permits show clear violations,” the lead regulator said. “This could lead to heavy fines and project freezes.”

Leo leaned forward, voice controlled and commanding. “Those issues were resolved under my grandfather’s later leadership. Meanwhile, Victor Hale is currently hiring criminals to attack active construction sites. We have evidence. While you investigate old paperwork, real people are in danger today.”

He slid copies of the warehouse recording across the table. The regulators watched the footage in silence. Their expressions shifted.

“We’ll look into this immediately,” the lead regulator promised. “Hale will be brought in for questioning.”

Leo left the meeting with a small but important victory. As the convoy returned to headquarters, new reports flooded in.

Marcus called ahead. “Sir, Meridian Tower security stopped two suspicious men trying to access the site with explosives. They’re in custody and already naming Victor’s contacts.”

Leo allowed himself one tight smile. “Good. Use it. Press every advantage.”

Back in the war room, the team celebrated the small wins, but Leo kept them focused.

“Next target,” he said. “Hale’s flagship commercial tower. Start aggressive negotiations with their minority shareholders. Offer premiums they can’t refuse. I want Victor watching his crown jewel slip away piece by piece.”

As evening fell, Sophia called again.

Leo answered. “More files?”

“Leo, my father knows about the regulators,” she said urgently. “He’s planning to release everything he has on your grandfather tonight unless you pull back. He’s also talking about one final strike. Please, meet me again. I can stop him if you help me get out of his reach.”

Elena, listening nearby, shook her head firmly.

Leo kept his voice cold. “Send whatever you have. But the meetings stop for now. Prove you’re really on my side, Sophia. Until then, stay out of my way.”

He ended the call and turned to Elena. “She’s scared. But fear makes people dangerous. We treat every file she sends as potential poison until proven otherwise.”

Elena nodded. “Smart. You’re thinking like a leader now. Not the man who once begged for their approval.”

Leo stared out at the city lights. The emotional weight sat heavy. He had never wanted this level of destruction. He had only wanted to be enough for the woman he loved. Now that love was tangled in suspicion, and power was the only language Victor understood.

“Final moves for tonight,” Leo told the team. “Secure all sites. Prepare the flagship tower assault. And monitor every Hale account we can access. When Victor falls, I want it to be total.”
