I call the number from a payphone at the bus station. A woman answers on the second ring.

"Ashford residence."

"I'm calling about the caregiver position," I say. My voice is steadier than I feel and I do not have the time to focus on my feelings.

"Are you available to start immediately?"

"Yes."
