Chapter 7 Just in Time
Sunesis's POV
Days rolled into weeks, and for everyday, consistently, just right before my shift, the mystery man showed up.
I had decided to label him mystery man, since he had refused to share his name.
Our routines were mainly the same, have a drink while we talked, he asked questions about me, and listened patiently while I talked, though I deliberately left some things out, as I couldn't divulge my real identity.
He cracked jokes, and we laughed, on other days we both sat in comfortable silence, while we slowly sipped from our drinks, and there were days he taught me to play the game of chess, and explained how every move he made could be applicable in real life scenarios.
I couldn’t help but wonder how a man like him could simply want us to talk and then offer me such a huge amount of money when I was assigned to him, without asking for my body or expecting any form of intimacy in return.
A part of me wanted to see his face, but I knew I couldn't make such requests. If i asked to see his, he would likely ask to see mine in return.
“Earth to Sable,” he flicked his fingers in front of me, pulling me back into the reality of the game in front of me.
I stared at the chess board carefully, as one wrong move could end it.
“Checkmate,” I squealed as I captured his Queen.
“You're improving,” he nodded approvingly, as he took a sip from his drink.
“Your name isn't Sable, is it?”
The question was so random and unexpected, it startled me. My entire body froze, as his eyes watched me intently from the mask.
“Why do you think it's not?” I asked calmly, as I regained myself.
“I've had my suspicions, and your reaction just now, confirmed it,”
“Hmm,” I muttered, and sipped from my drink, “And your name isn't mystery man is it?”
“Mystery man?” He chuckled, “Really, Sable,is that the best you could come up with?”
“Well, what would you have suggested?” I tilted my head sideways.
He scoffed, and leaned back on his chair, but didn't say another word, we spent the remaining minutes left of my shift in silence.
“Well, I guess my time here is up,” I announced, just as the timer went off.
“Yeah, unfortunately so,” he muttered.
I smiled under my mask, and walked out of the room.
I paused in front of the door that led to the stage, hearing the loud music blasting from inside.
It had been weeks since I had been up there, and I had the mystery man to thank for that. I continued my walk to the changing room, changed, and headed home.
The next morning I stood in front of the broken mirror in our apartment as I dressed. I had made a mental note of changing the mirror, but something kept obstructing my plan.
I paired a big black corporate pants with a white shirt, and as usual, threw on a massive grey sweatshirt that swallowed my entire frame and covered my scars, my glasses, and pulled my hair up into a messy bun.
I kissed my grandmother goodbye, “Have a nice day,” she called after me, as I rushed out. I glanced at the door of apartment 4b briefly, before rushing downstairs.
I had barely been seeing Jay these days, I guess it was because I had to walk overtime in the office , and head straight for the club, as soon as I returned.
I got to the company, and waited by the elevator for Blake's arrival.
He let out a long hiss, as soon as the elevator doors opened, and he set his gaze on me.
“Having to see you so early in the morning, has to be my worst nightmare,” he groaned, as he tossed his bag and coat my way.
“How can someone look so hideous in the morning?” He muttered under his breath, but it was loud enough for me and the others around to hear.
“Your coffee, Sir,” I placed the mug on his table, as soon as he was settled in his office.
He took one sip, and spat the entire thing out, “Do you not know how to do anything right?” He yelled, and I flinched, stepping back.
“Are you still standing there? Get this sorry excuse of a coffee out of my sight, you daft thing,”
“I’m sorry, Sir,” I bowed slightly, and made to walk out.
“And tsunami,” I bit my lips, as I fought to stop myself from telling him, my name wasn't tsunami.
“Hide your face from me for the rest of today,” he added, as he typed away furiously on his keyboard.
I let out a sigh, as I slid into my chair. He had been really cranky these days, and I had a good guess why, I leaned back into my chair and shut my eyes.
It was probably pent up frustration, from not seeing Sable for weeks, my manager had told me he had been demanding for me.
Footsteps approaching my desk, made me snap my eyes open immediately. I noticed a lady in front of me, one I hadn't seen before.
I sized her up immediately, she was dressed in a skimpy gown, wild makeup, and heels that were exaggeratedly long.
“How may I help you?” I asked calmly.
“I’m here to see Blake,”
“Do you have an appointment?”
“Yes,” she responded immediately.
“Name please,”
“Samantha,” she licked her lips, as she spoke…
I confirmed her appointment, and let her in.
Just a few minutes later, a file that urgently needed Blake's signature was brought in, and I had to give it to him
I made a heavy breathe, mentally preparing for whatever hailstone he was going to rain on me.
I froze in my spot, as soon as I pushed the door open.
The lady was bent over, while Blake stood behind her, thrusting into her wildly, her moans filled the entire room. The only reason I couldn't hear them well from outside was the fact that the door was sound proof.
Blake, looked up at me, and a smirk curved its way up his lips, as he stepped back, spread her up on his table, sending everything crashing down, and took her there, while maintaining eye contact with me.
I staggered back, and the files slipped from my hands as I hurriedly closed the door back. Immediately after the intercom button came on, and I could hear their moans from my seat, Blake was deliberately taunting me.
I blocked my ears with my hand, as tears slipped down my cheeks, I felt the love I had for him, snap out of place.
That evening, as I walked home, tears clouded my vision, I kept staggering as I walked, my heart felt like it was going to be ripped out of its place. My chest tightened, and my palm became sweaty.
I was in a gaze, when I got pulled into a dark alley, my eyes widened, as three guys in masks appeared before me, and gripped me trying to pin me to the ground, I tried, as hard as I could to kick back, but I didn't stand a chance against the three of them, so I gave in.
They pulled my sweatshirt over my head, and almost ripped my shirt off, when someone hit them from behind, a fierce fight ensued and before long, the three guys were on the ground.
I looked up to see Jay, standing before him, he knelt before me quickly, and pulled me into his arms.
It was as if a dam broke open inside me, as tears rushed down my cheeks, though I couldn’t help but wonder how he had shown up at the perfect moment.
“What's wrong, Sunesis?” he asked quietly, as he realized this was more than just shock from the incident.
I stared at him blankly, unsure of how to tell him that I was broken because I saw my boss who I wasn't even dating, with another lady.
