Chapter 6

"Oh my God, Emily, what happened to you?" the nurse at the station asked in shock.

Emily didn't explain, just said weakly, "Could you please bandage my wounds?"

The nurse immediately helped Emily professionally, but Emily was weak and had blood clotting issues, so the nurse called a doctor to prescribe medication.

After the wounds were bandaged, the nurse helped Emily back to her room. Eli was kneeling on the sofa playing with his phone watch.

Eli looked at the white gauze on both her arms and pouted.

Emily took her medicine as instructed and felt drowsy, ignoring Eli.

She slept deeply and was woken up by Sophia's crying, still in a daze.

"Emily, please give me back my son. I'm begging you. I'll do anything you want."

"Emily, give me back my son, give me back my son."

Give her back her son? Emily finally came to her senses and looked at the crying Sophia in confusion, too tired to speak.

Wasn't Eli sitting right there on the sofa playing?

"Emily, I'm begging you, please. Give me back my son, okay?"

"I know I was wrong, but adults' mistakes have nothing to do with the child. Please give me back my son."

Sophia's eyes were red, tears streaming down like they cost nothing.

Emily just found it ridiculous. She had nothing to do with Eli, so why would they come to her when Eli went missing?

Where could a patient like her hide a child?

She did nothing and refused to accept Sophia's accusations, so she ignored Sophia.

But Sophia was convinced that she was behind the child's disappearance and actually knelt straight down in front of her hospital bed.

"Emily, I'll kowtow to you. Please give me back my son, okay?"

She cried miserably, raising her voice to question Emily.

"Emily, what do I have to do for you to give me back my son?"

"Should I give you my life?"

Her voice was so loud it attracted people from the next room.

"That woman is so evil, deliberately taking away someone else's child. How vicious."

"More than vicious! I heard she can't have children, and when her husband wanted to adopt this girl's child to spare her the pain of injections and medication, she threw a fit and hurt herself to threaten her husband!"

"No wonder this woman is so heartless, taking away someone's son and then having the nerve to demand an apology from the victim. Shameless."

These people pointed fingers at Emily. Emily frowned to explain, but Sophia beat her to it.

"Emily, please give me back my child, okay? Eli is only four years old. He'll cry if he's away from his mother too long. Please."

She was hysterical, playing the role of a mother who didn't know her child's whereabouts very well.

The onlookers became even more indignant, pointing at Emily's nose and cursing, not giving Emily any chance to speak.

"This has nothing to do with me. You've got the wrong person." Emily refused to be the scapegoat and defended herself loudly.

But Sophia didn't believe her. She knelt in front of Emily, trying to grab her hand.

Emily felt sick seeing Sophia's fake act and quickly hid her hands under the blanket.

A flash of cunning crossed Sophia's eyes. She cried heartbreakingly, her body swaying as if about to faint.

"Emily, you evil woman!" James's cold voice was full of disgust.

He gently held Sophia in his arms and questioned coldly, "Emily, can't you just behave?"

"I just felt guilty about misunderstanding you, and you turn around and go after Eli. He's only four years old. Even if you don't agree to the adoption, you can't take it out on the child."

"Tell me right now, where is Eli?"

Another person randomly accusing her. Emily was furious, staring coldly at the embracing couple, her voice equally cold.

"This has nothing to do with me. If you don't believe me, check the surveillance footage."

"Emily, you're deliberately stalling for time." Sophia loudly retorted, anxiously tugging at James's clothes. "James, don't believe her. Eli must be so scared right now."

James felt sorry for her, but having previously suspected Emily was involved in Sophia's kidnapping, he couldn't be as hasty as before.

"Checking the surveillance won't take much time." James comforted her softly. "If this really has anything to do with Emily, I won't let her off."

Sophia was unwilling and glared at Emily hatefully when no one was looking.

Emily just found it all absurd and rolled her eyes without hesitation. She would never again be a lamb for slaughter.

If Sophia wanted to use her as a stepping stone, no way.

For fairness, James brought Emily along when he went to check the surveillance.

"Mr. Smith, the surveillance on this floor broke down today." The surveillance manager said carefully, head lowered.

James's face darkened. "Emily, what do you have to say now?"

Without waiting for Emily to answer, James said condescendingly, "Emily, stop making trouble. Tell me where Eli is right now, and I'll let you continue enjoying your current status."

Emily didn't care. Sophia's eyes were teary, her face full of resentment.

She shouted angrily at Emily, "Emily, give me back Eli! Give him back!"

"If the surveillance is broken, we can still find witnesses." Emily found even looking at James and Sophia disgusting, but she absolutely wouldn't allow them to slander her like this.

She brought James and Sophia to the nurses' station on this floor to find the nurse who had bandaged her, but the other nurses at the station told them:

"That nurse was sent to support a neighboring city. She won't be back for a week."

"Can you give us her contact information?"

"I'm sorry, ma'am, we have regulations. We can't give out contact information of deployed medical staff to unrelated people."

It was all too convenient—this was clearly a trap set for her.

Just as Emily thought this, she heard James's displeased warning.

"Emily, the surveillance on this floor just happened to break today, and there's the transferred nurse. What more excuses do you have?"

James's eyes were angry and disappointed. "You did something bad but were afraid of being discovered, so you used my wife's identity to protect yourself, not realizing that's the real flaw."

"You hurt my son, so you must face the consequences!"

Sophia looked at James expectantly, only to hear James coldly warn Emily.

"When you're healed, I'll deal with you."

Emily sneered, "Then call the police. I believe they'll give me justice."

James frowned, his patience exhausted.

"Emily, how long are you going to keep this up?"

"Asking to call the police is making trouble? What about you then?" Emily asked calmly, her eyes full of mockery.

James instinctively avoided Emily's gaze, clenching his fists as he weighed his options.

At that moment, Sophia clutched her stomach and said pitifully, "James, I... my stomach hurts."

After speaking, she fainted.
