Chapter 3 The Trap You Don’t See

By the next morning, the rules had changed. Not officially or in any way Amara could point to. But she felt it the moment she stepped onto the grounds of St. Darius Academy. The stares were sharper, less curious but more deliberate.

Yesterday, she had been a spectacle and today, she felt like a warning. Conversations lowered, not stopped or avoided when she passed but just adjusted. As if people were careful about what they said around her. Not for her sake but for theirs.

Amara walked through it all with her head high. If this was what came with speaking up, then fine. She was ready to go all out. What she didn't expect was how quiet Lucien would be. He didn't approach, speak to her or even acknowledge her in class.

At first, it felt like a relief but then, by second period, it felt wrong.

Amara was in her new usual seat since nothing about her old routine existed anymore, as she flipped open her notebook. She was almost halfway through copying the assessment on the board when the teacher's voice cut through the room.

"Group assignment," Mr. Hale announced. "Pairs of two. You'll present next week." A low groan soon moved through the class but Amara didn't react. Group work didn't matter; she'd always end up alone anyways.

"Pairs are already assigned," Mr. Hale added, scanning a sheet of paper. "No changes." That got people's attention while she remained still. That was new, everyone kept mumbling.

He soon began calling names. One by one, from predictable pairs, to friends and then cliques, people who already worked together. Just then, her name came.

"Amara Kade." He paused and she immediately looked up. "And Lucien Voss." He concluded. The room went silent. Not with shock or surprise but something else. Something much heavier.

She didn't move or blink. Amara just turned her head and found him already looking at her. Lucien slightly leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. As if it had nothing to do with him or he hadn't just orchestrated it.

She first looked away, not out of fear but out of understanding. So, this is how you play, she thought.

After class, she didn't rush to him or approach him to acknowledge the pairing. If he wanted control, he wouldn't get it that easily, she told herself

Amara slowly packed her bag and deliberately waited until most students had left before stepping into the hallway. There he was, already there. His leaned against the lockers like he had nowhere else to be.

Amara stopped in her tracks. He looked like he had all the time in the world and had been waiting for quite a while. She didn't change direction or hesitate. She just walked straight toward him and stopped a few feet away.

Neither of them immediately spoke. The hallway buzzed around them, but it felt distant and muted. Like the space between them existed separately from everything else.

"You planned that," she finally said.

His lips slightly curved. "I don't plan," he replied. "I arrange."

Amara crossed her arms. "That wasn't a coincidence."

"No," he easily agreed. At least he wasn't pretending. Amara studied him for a moment and then said:

"So what's the goal?" Lucien tilted his head.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On you." That answer irritated her more than it should have.

"I'm not interested in playing games," she said. Lucien pushed off the lockers and stepped closer. Not too close but enough to shift the air.

"That's unfortunate," he murmured. "Because you're already in one."

Amara held his gaze. "Then explain the rules." He paused and then said.

"There aren't any."

Of course, she quietly exhaled. "Then here's mine," she said and that got his attention. It was a flicker and subtle but real.

"I don't follow orders," she continued. "I don't get intimidated. And I don't lose."

A slow smile spread across his face. "That last one," he said softly, "is going to be a problem." Amara didn't respond because she knew that was the point.

Lucien studied her for a moment longer. "Meet me after school." He said.

Amara raised an eyebrow. "For the assignment." She didn't answer immediately because that felt more like a setup and she knew it.

He slightly leaned closer. "Or don't," he added. "But then I'll assume you're not as committed as you pretend to be." There it was, a well calculated and subtle bait.

Amara met his eyes. "I'll be there."

Lucien's smile slightly deepened. "Good." He added and then stepped back. Just like that, he walked away.

After school, the academy felt different. Much quieter and almost empty. With most students having left already. Amara stood outside the classroom they had been assigned. The door was slightly open and she pushed it.

She stepped inside but met an empty room. She checked the time and she was 5 minutes early. She moved to a desk near the window and set her bag down. Waited and waited. Five minutes passed and then ten, then fifteen.

But nothing or no sign of him at all. Amara slowly exhaled, it was predictable. She knew it wasn't about the assignment. It never was. She quietly picked up her bag and turned toward the door but froze. The door was closed.

She was sure she had left it open. Slowly, she walked toward it. Tried the handle but it was locked. Her grip tightened and she tried again but nothing. Just then, a quiet click sounded behind her.

Amara intuitively turned and found Lucien near the back of the room. Like he had always been there, waiting and watching. Her pulse spiked but her expression didn't change.

"You're late," she said.

Lucien smiled faintly. "I wanted to see how long you'd wait."

Amara crossed her arms. "Congratulations. You've seen it."

She then walked toward the door again. "Open it." She said but he didn't move.

"No." Amara stopped and slowly turned back.

"And this is what?" she asked. "Your idea of a game?"

Lucien stepped forward. "Not a game," he said. "A lesson."

Her eyes slightly narrowed. "I'm not interested."

"That's not optional." Something in his tone shifted. Not louder but heavier and more serious. Amara felt it but she didn't back down.

"Then you're wasting your time," she said. Lucien stopped a few steps away from her. Close enough now that the tension felt real and palpable.

"You still don't understand," he said quietly.

"Then explain." He paused.

"You embarrassed me." The words were calm and controlled. But underneath something sharper. It was not anger or pride exactly but challenged.

Amara held his gaze. "You embarrassed yourself," she corrected.

Silence snapped tight and for a second his eyes dangerously flickered which was soon replaced with coldness. His gaze even focused. "Do you know what happens to people who try to stand against me?" he asked.

Amara didn't hesitate. "They fold," she said. "But I won't, you know why? Cos I'm different."

He took a closer look at her as if he was trying to find the breaking point. The flaw or weakness but she didn't give him one. Not even a crack and that was new for him. His face slowly lined with a smile. Not amused or mocking but intrigued.

"Good," he said softly and Amara frowned slightly. "That's not the reaction you expected, is it?"

"No," she admitted. Lucien took one final step closer. He wasn't threatening or being aggressive but just deliberate.

"Because I'm not trying to break you," he said. Her breath caught. "Not yet." The words landed differently as he reached past her and unlocked the door before stepping back.

"You can go," he added. Amara didn't move immediately. Instead, she searched his face, trying to read or understand him.

"What do you want?" she asked. Lucien's gaze held hers, steady and intent.

"I want to see how long you last." A chill moved down her spine but she didn't show it.

"I'm not going anywhere." His smile deepened.

"I know." That was the problem he wanted to fix.

Amara turned and walked out of the classroom. But this time, she felt it. It wasn't just an attention seeking or bullying but something personal because it was no longer just something random. Lucien Voss no longer considered her as a target either but rather a challenge and a complicated one as such.
