Chapter 3
"My boxer faced unfair judging. I need compensation. Otherwise, I'll sue you in federal court for fraud. And there's evidence that your boxing venue is evading taxes!"
Evelyn wasn't scared by the bald man's threats at all. Instead, she fought back with the tax issue.
The boxing venue's owner, Kay Finch, looked like a tiger ready to strike, as if he was about to teach Evelyn a harsh lesson any second!
But he held back.
Kay wasn't sure if Evelyn had come prepared. He didn't want to attract the tax bureau's attention.
"Lady, you need to take responsibility for what you're saying. My boxing venue has always been known for fairness in New York. Also, I haven't hidden a single dollar from taxes!"
"One million dollars. I can let this rigged match slide, but only this once."
Evelyn held up one finger.
"You're completely crazy!" Martin Miller, Kay's friend and one of the venue's major shareholders, said angrily, "You dare to blackmail us? You better watch out or you won't live to spend that money!"
"1.5 million dollars!"
"Fuck!"
"Give it to her!" Kay's face looked terrible, "This 1.5 million is enough to buy that boxer's life. You better pray he survives!"
Kay and some shareholders had placed heavy bets on Brian by rigging the match, totaling over twenty million dollars.
If Brian beat Griffin, they would make five million dollars in profit. Even after paying Evelyn 1.5 million, it would still be a profitable deal.
"He will survive!"
Evelyn's eyes fixed on Griffin.
At this moment, Griffin and Brian were briefly separated by the referee. In ten seconds, the match would continue.
After being knocked down once by Griffin, Brian became very cautious, staying in full defensive mode, not giving Griffin any chance to score.
Time passed second by second, and neither side had scored any points.
"Kill him! Lion! Damn it, aren't you the world champion?"
"It's almost overtime. Meteor is younger than Lion. Lion definitely can't beat him!"
"Use your fists to smash that rookie's head!"
The people who bet on Brian were getting emotional.
As the first round was coming to an end, Brian, whose energy was mostly drained, was getting anxious.
He clearly realized he had to do something!
Then Brian actively closed the distance between himself and Griffin.
"Here it comes!"
"Let's go!"
Brian's supporters shouted from the audience.
"Tear him apart!"
"Tear him apart!"
The commentator's voice became excited too, "Our Lion is quickly closing in on his prey!"
"Uppercut!"
"Meteor blocks with his arm!"
"Oh my god, that punch definitely packed a punch. We can see pain on Meteor's face. He's hurt! This is a perfect opportunity! Tear through his defense!"
"Tear him apart!"
"Tear him apart!"
The atmosphere in the boxing venue reached its peak.
The commentator made no effort to hide his bias toward Brian, but this didn't upset the audience.
Too few people supported Meteor. His popularity couldn't compete with the long-famous Brian.
"Your boxer is going to lose, lady."
Kay mocked from backstage, "Next, Lion will tear him apart like prey! That 1.5 million dollars can be his funeral money!"
Kay's words caused everyone to laugh. Everyone was waiting to see Evelyn make a fool of herself.
But Evelyn ignored them.
She noticed that Griffin's speed wasn't affected by Brian's punch. If Griffin was really hurt, his reaction speed would definitely drop, but it didn't!
Pretending!
Griffin was pretending!
Deliberately showing weakness to the enemy—this was a clever tactic!
Sure enough, Brian fell for it. He gave up his careful defensive stance and chose to attack with full force!
His straight punch flew toward Griffin's face, twice as fast as the previous punch!
"My god! Lion is launching an aggressive attack! He's given up defense!"
"Meteor blocks!"
"He blocked it! No score! Unbelievable!"
The commentator looked shocked, "This match is amazing!"
"However—"
His tone suddenly changed, "Meteor's body seems to be shaking. It looks like blocking that punch cost him quite a bit. If Lion launches another attack with the same power, I bet Meteor might not be able to take it!"
The audience booed in unison, mocking Griffin.
If even the commentator could notice this, how could Brian, Griffin's opponent, not see it?
"Great chance!"
Brian stepped forward and kicked at Griffin's lower abdomen—one of a man's most vulnerable spots. Once hit there, fighting spirit quickly crumbles!
However, that area doesn't count for points and is a foul. Everyone knew this rule, but the audience didn't criticize Brian for his shameless behavior. Instead, they cheered loudly, "Kick his dick off!"
Brian's right fist smashed hard toward Griffin's head!
"You're finished!"
He showed a vicious smile.
"A beautiful diversion! Lion isn't really attacking Meteor's lower body—it's just a trick to confuse Meteor! Lion's real target is Meteor's head! The champion's experience is too rich!"
"How will Meteor defend? He can only protect one place. Whichever spot he leaves open, he can't afford to take the hit!"
"What? Meteor is giving up defense. He's going to trade punches with Lion?"
"Meteor's fist is faster! He wasn't hurt at all. Meteor fooled everyone!"
"He hit Lion's head first!"
The whole venue went quiet. The audience stared in shock at the scene before them.
"Idiot!"
This was the last thing Brian heard before passing out. Then his body fell straight down.
"Lion is down! Holy shit! What kind of match is this!"
"Oh God, can the champion get up?"
The referee on the ring immediately stepped forward to stop Griffin from continuing to attack the fallen Brian—the rules didn't allow it.
"One..."
"Two..."
"Three..."
...
"Ten!"
After counting to ten, Brian still couldn't get up. Blood was seeping from his left eye, and his whole face was swollen.
This situation required immediate medical attention, but his coach still wouldn't give up, hoping Brian could continue with the next two rounds.
If he confirmed medical treatment was needed, the match would be ruled a loss immediately!
"Brian! Brian! Damn it!"
The coach couldn't wake Brian.
Finally, even the referee who had been favoring Brian and helping him cheat had to make the call, "Meteor knocked down Lion. Lion cannot continue fighting. Match ruled a loss!"
"The winner of the featured bout is—Meteor!"
"The old king is dead. Long live the new king!"
