Chapter 6: I Got Paid Enough

Abigail

‘I would say that was a successful shopping trip, don't you think?’ Sonia said as she put the bags in the boot.

'Yes, I agree.’ I turned around to take my baby girl out of her stroller just as a car came speeding down the parking lot and crashed into my baby. My screams were so loud that I couldn't hear anything else, I rushed over to where she fell and picked her up, looking at her face.

'No baby, you are fine. Mommy is right here, you are going to be okay.’ I looked down at her face where her eyes were closed and her onesie ripped up. Her face was bleeding, Sonia had called an ambulance, I could only hear the sirens. Rocking back and forth with her face in the crook of my neck, blood started staining my shirt and dripping onto my hands. It felt like we were sitting there for hours.

‘Okay, Ma'am we got to take the baby.’ I heard the voice of a stranger coming from my right ear.

I slowly shook my head, zoned out with tears flowing down my face while my lips quivered. After a few minutes, I heard the lady sighed and walked closer to me to take my baby out of my bloody hand. I reached out to take her back as Sonia held me from behind, keeping my hands free from reaching out anymore. I kicked and screamed for her to let me go while she sobbed at my back. I want Fiona, I want my baby back.

'No, please! Please bring her back. Fiona!’

“Fiona!” I screamed and woke up, sobbing into her blanket that I slept with every night. I couldn't stop screaming, Sonia ran into the room as usual and tried to calm me down, silently crying with me. I miss my baby so much.

“Sonia, please, why did they take her from me? If they kept her with me, she would have been okay.” I sobbed as she pulled me closer to her, tears failing down her eyes.

“I know, I know. She is okay, Abigail, I promise.” She mumbled.

“No, Sonia.” I said weakly.

“She needs her mother and I need her. Please, bring her back to me, I need her so badly.” I said, knowing she wasn't able to bring her back. No one could.

I fell back asleep with tears trickling down my face as my body shook and she rubbed my back. I just want my daughter back. That is all I asked.

I woke up the next morning with swollen eyes and a very bad headache. I took medicine and walked out of my room, seeing Sonia in the kitchen making some breakfast.

“Good morning, are you hungry?” She asked in a cheery voice. She was such a big help with all that I have been through, she knows how to ignore the negatives and focus on the happy things in life. I smiled at her and nodded, sitting down on the stand behind the island.

“We have to go shopping today, I don't want you wearing stuff to the club that I wore last year. You need stuff that is your size.”  She said, leaving no room for argument as she put two pancakes on my plate and I nodded again.

“Stop that, I need words.” She stopped moving around the kitchen, waiting for me to respond verbally.

“Okay, sounds good.” My voice sounded croaky because of how sore my throat was. I cleared my throat, letting out a cough while she gave me a sad look.

“I am always going to be here for you, okay?” She assured me gently. I smiled at her as I took my last bite of pancakes and then stood up and hugged her. She was like a mother to me, as weird as it sounded or a very caring big sister.

“I am going to go shower and get ready.” I let her know before heading to my room to pick out an outfit and then made my way to the bathroom.

I took a second to look at myself in the mirror, my eyes were so red and swollen. How am I supposed to work looking like this? And on my first day? I shook my head, not wanting to worry about that right now and hopped into the shower. After taking a couple of extra minutes to let my tears out, I washed my face and stepped out. My hair still held the waves from last night so I left it like that and put some concealer around my eyes. I finished the rest of my make up and wore my clothes.

“Are you ready, Abigail?” I heard Sonia yelling from the living room.

I collected my bag from the nightstand table, not forgetting to put one of Fiona's blankets in it and headed out of the room. Sonia made sure we had everything before we left.

A few minutes later, we got to the mall and headed to the store where she goes to buy some stripper clothing. The second we walked in, I immediately felt awkward so I just let her decide what to buy and what not.

“Okay, I have got a few things here for you.” She said and I looked at her hands.

“Who is paying for all this? I don't have much money.” I said, praying that she would just drop some of the clothes but of course, she gave me an obvious look, telling me she was going to.

“No, I will just buy for now and then buy the rest when I earn more money.” She laughed.

“Baby girl, I get paid enough to take care of a family with six children. Don't worry about it.” I looked at her disapprovingly and she rolled her eyes and kissed me through the air.

After paying for the clothes, we headed to a restaurant to have lunch. And I noticed three sitting a few tables down from us, they looked about the same age as us or maybe older. One had pale skin, bags under his eyes and brown hair. Another had dark hair and was looking at us and back to his friends as if they were talking about us. My eyes gazed over to the three guys and made eye contact. Wait, no, no, it can't be. It can't be him.

“Are you okay, Abigail? What are you looking at?” Sonia asked and I quickly looked back at her just as she looked over to the guys. The look on her face was terrifying, she looked angry, very angry. When she looked back at me, she wanted to confront Caden but I convinced her to just leave it. She warned me that if she was ever going to see him again, she would give him hell.
