Chapter 4

Lucifer

I was watching the door the whole time, waiting for Kid to make her appearance, I heard her before I saw her, she was changing her mind, but I was at the door as she walked out “Oh no you don’t.”  I said as I took her arm and lead her to the table.  She looked everywhere except at me. She put the plate of chips in the middle, she took one and popped it in her mouth, after she swallowed, she was looking down saying, “Help yourself.”  “Don’t mind if I do.”  I took one and popped it in my mouth, she was actually looking up at me, watching me swallow the chip.  She probable thought if I was indeed a vampire how could I eat.  Another misperception people have of vampires, I think books and movies are to blame. But for now, she still thinks I’m not one.  “So last night.”  I started.  “I’m so sorry I should have walked past I shouldn’t have stopped.”  “Can you look at me please?” She slowly lifted her face and met mine, her eyes where still concentrating on something else.  “I like looking people in the eyes when I speak to them.”  She lifted her eyes and looked into my golden-brown eyes.  “So why didn’t you?”  I could see she was trying to think of an explanation anything but the truth.  “The truth please.”  “I can’t tell you, I don’t even know you.”  I pushed my hand out to her, “My name is Lucifer, I’m 35 and stay in a penthouse apartment about 2 blocks from here, I have my own art gallery.” She just looked at me “You have your own art gallery?”  “Yes, I do.  Now you.”  I told her “Oh okay, my name is Kid, I’m 26 and live in an apartment also 2 blocks from here, I work as a manager here but have an Art Degree.”  “Well nice to meet you Kid. And I see we have already something in common.” “Nice to meet you Lucifer.”  “Can I ask you why Lucifer?”  “If you answer me, I’ll answer you.”  Clearly, she wanted to know why my mom and dad would have called me Lucifer because she started with “I heard noises and I went to investigate.”  “Okay but when you saw what was going on why did you stay?”  She turned a bright red in her face looking away.  “Oh no, now I need to know.”  “I found it sexy and wanted material for when I play with myself.”  She said very fast. “Oh, I’m honored.”  I said to her, looking her in the eyes.  “Can I just say you have the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen.”  “Jeez Kid you are so kind with all the compliments.”  “Sorry.”  “No need to be sorry I like compliments.”

I saw the door open and then someone I’ve never thought I would see again came walking out the back, David and old and I mean very old friend of mine.  “David.”  I said as I got up and shook his hand.  “Lucifer my God what are you doing here?”  “Visiting with Kid here.”  “Kid I was just about to tell you you need to get back to work.”  “She just came to sit can’t you spare her for another 10 minutes.”  “Just if the two of us can catch up some time soon.”  “Off course I know where you work now.”  “I don’t work here Lucifer it’s my place.”  “Jeez nice place.”  “I’ll make a turn tomorrow night.  What do you think?”  “I’ll be here.”  “Good see you tomorrow, David.”  “Tomorrow Lucifer.  And Kid 10 minutes then I want you back on the floor.”  “No problem, David.”  When David walked away, Kid looked at me “You know David?”  “Yes, we are old University buddies.”  I’m not going to tell her how old but it was old.  “And you haven’t seen him in a while?”  “Ages actually.”  “But you stay around the corner.”  “Kid bar’s is not really my thing.”  “Oh” Was all she said, she looked away and then back at me again, “I told you now, you need to tell me why Lucifer?”  “Well, it was actually my eyes.”  “Your eyes?”  “Yes, as soon as my mother saw my eyes, she said it looked like the devils and my dad said then his name is Lucifer.”  “Were your parents religious at all? Because that is a slap in the face.”  “No, they weren’t so to them it was just a name.”  “Your eyes are so beautiful I would never have said you had the eyes of a devil.”  “Thank you, Kid, but it doesn’t bother me it’s just a name.”  She just shook her head.

“Can I ask you if Bar’s is not your kind of place, why are you here tonight?”  “I’m here looking for you.”  “Oh.”  “Is that all you going to say.”  “What else is there to say?”  “Well, what about what you witnessed after me and Stella had sex?”  “I didn’t witness anything.”  She said quickly.  “Are you sure.”  “Yes, whatever it was I was delusional I didn’t see anything.”  “What if I tell you, you weren’t delusional?”  “NO, I don’t want to hear it.”  “But I want to tell you.”  “Not now I need to get back to work before David comes back and ripped me another one.”  “Well, I am coming back tomorrow night can we go out after your shift?”  “You want to go out after 3 in the morning?”  “Yes, why not we can watch the sun come up together.”  “You not going to take no for an answer, are you?”  “No, I am not.”  “Okay tomorrow night.”  “See you tomorrow, Kid.”  I watched her disappeared into the back of the kitchen, then she was back to the front of the bar.  I watched her a few minutes longer.  I couldn’t believe it; I was making dates with this woman I was even tracking her down.  Maybe I should stay away from her maybe she is not the right one for what I have in mind, because clearly, she’s going to change the rules, I could feel it in my dead bones she was going to change me.  Am I really ready to change after so many years?
