Chapter 1

"Sasha, Tiffany, Louisa, Anjanette, Carla, and Taylor, come forward." Sasha moved through the other girls in the room to stand at the front, where the five others whose names had been called were already standing, awaiting the orders that would begin the final part of this farce of a contest. The hunt. These other girls, who had the pleasure of being favored by the organizers of this ridiculous contest, would fight, sometimes to the death, for the right to decide who would be sent to die in just over a week. Oh, how they hated her and would do anything to disrupt her and make her lose. They exchanged angry glances with her, and she squared her shoulders, ignoring them as she had for the past several years. They wouldn't get to her. Not today. Not when Kalani's life depended on this final hunt.

Chapter 2

A furious howl a quarter mile away ended their small celebration immediately, and Sasha smiled at her team, knowing Tiffany's team had finally found the unicorn with its missing horn. "Shall we show everyone how much better we are than them?" They all nodded, nearly rolling with their obvious glee. They strutted into the dining hall and began to approach the table where the headmistress, the council, and "her mother" were seated. At the sight of her, her mother sat up straighter, and her eyes narrowed. The tension in the large room increased significantly as they confidently made their way forward. Sasha pulled the horn from her bra as she knelt and raised it to the group. She lowered her head, greatly enjoying the disappointment on her mother's face.

Chapter 3

Sasha lay on her bed after the evening's events, staring at the wooden slats that supported Kalani's bed. She counted the lines she had carved into the wood after each of Tiffany's attacks. 477 vicious attacks in 5 years. 9 of them had nearly killed Kalani. She clenched her fists. Yes, that bitch would pay. She would make sure of it, even if it killed her, and it would kill her. The look on her face when she named her had made her evening more bearable. She thought she was safe. Winning was supposed to guarantee survival, not be a death sentence.

Chapter 9

"One by one, you will introduce yourselves. I trust you were taught how," Jackson ordered. "Yes, sir," they all said in unison. Sasha was pushed forward. "You first." "I am volunteer number 53. I am 19 years old." She reached for the belt holding her robe closed. She began to untie it when her hand was pulled away from her body, and the king held her robe closed. "No!" He tied her belt tightly around her. "State your name, age, and one fact about yourself. Were you told why you were chosen to be here?" Sasha nodded. "State that as well. You do not need to display your bodies like pieces of meat. You are more than that." He returned to his throne and sat, waving his hand. "Begin again."
